Skelwith Fold Caravan Park

Skelwith Fold Caravan Park, Ambleside LA22 0HY, UK

5-star touring and glamping park in 130 acres of woodland, three miles from Ambleside

About Skelwith Fold Caravan Park

Skelwith Fold Caravan Park sprawls across over 130 acres of ancient woodland between Ambleside and the Langdale valley, its mature trees screening pitches and lending the whole site a settled, parkland atmosphere rather than the open-field feel of smaller Lakeland sites. It's considerably bigger and more developed than most campsites near Grasmere, with facilities that run well beyond the basics: modern heated shower blocks, a drying room for wet gear, a dog wash station, EV charging points and WiFi across the grounds. A well-stocked shop sells essentials and local produce, while a recreation field, woodland adventure course and recently refurbished playground keep families entertained without leaving the site.

The sheer scale can feel less intimate than smaller, wilder pitches nearby, but the five-star rating and consistently high reviews reflect upkeep and infrastructure few Lake District sites can match. Dogs are welcome—up to three per pitch—and the woodland setting makes it a popular base for walkers heading into Langdale as well as those visiting Ambleside and Grasmere, both a short drive away. Open March to late November.

Just got back from a lovely few days in our campervan. Beautiful setting kept immaculate but still maintaining that forest feel. Spacious plots with frequent water taps. Facilities are spotless and I appreciated the warm shower room floors! Great to see a dog wash! If you have a doodle you know! Bus stops at the bottom of the long drive. Allow 20-30 mins walk from Loughrigg area of site. Buses stop running from Ambleside at 7.30. If you get a taxi use John's taxi (often parked outside Royal Oak (great pub drop in for drink) He charged £10 as opposed to uber who wanted £33 for 10 min drive! We walked in to Ambleside via back gate and another time via front drive, it was around an hour both ways with quiet road or footpath for most of it. Staff friendly and helpful. Silent at night apart from a few irritating tawny owls who really had no respect for sites quiet rules! It was wonderful to be immersed in nature in such a stunning place. We will definitely be returning. Soon I hope!

Just come back from a 2 night stay with our van/tentbox. The site itself is beautiful and well set out, very clean and tidy. And very peaceful. Staff were very friendly and helpful, especially when someone was using our electric hook up. You could pick your own pitch but would advise to get there a bit earlier to get a good pitch. Nice walk from the site to Ambleside with well signposted routes. The food van that is there on a Friday night was delicious. Will definitely be back very soon and would highly recommend to all!

We had a great weekend at Skelwith Fold Caravan Park — the site was just as lovely as I remembered from the last time we stayed around 10 years ago. The facilities were amazing — always clean, warm, and really well looked after, which makes such a difference. The girls absolutely loved the park, which looks like it’s been newly renovated and was fantastic for keeping them entertained. The nature walks around the site were beautiful too, and we spotted all sorts of wildlife over the weekend. One thing that really stood out was how convenient the location is, with bus stops in both directions right at the end of the driveway at the site entrance, making it really easy to explore the area without needing to drive everywhere. The shop was brilliant and had everything you could possibly need, and the staff were all so friendly and helpful. They were constantly checking in as they passed to make sure everything was okay and whether we needed anything, which was a lovely touch. We stayed with our friends in our caravan and tent box in the premium section, and it was perfect. Safe to say we’re already planning our next trip back!

Fabulous, well kept and scenic site, set in woodland. Pitches are perfectly flat and level and well equipped. The premium pitches have water, waste and TV connection on pitch. Showers and toilets immaculate, warm and spacious. Laundry and washing up facilities great. Highly recommended.
