About Tufton Arms Hotel
Walk into a room at the Tufton Arms Hotel and the Victorian character is immediate, from period-inspired furnishings to the sense of a building with real history behind it. There are 22 rooms in total, each set up for a comfortable stay with the practical extras covered, including free WiFi and air conditioning, so guests can settle in without fuss.
Downstairs, the hotel centres on a restaurant known for its seafood, along with a bar for a quieter drink and a garden for stepping outside. Breakfast is available each morning, and a 24 hour reception means arrival times are never a problem. The hotel also has meeting rooms and hosts weddings, and pets are welcome for guests travelling with animals. Free on-site parking is provided, which is useful given the Market Square location.
Appleby-in-Westmorland itself makes a good base for exploring the wider Lake District, with the town's own market square right on the doorstep. A lift is available for guests who prefer not to use the stairs, and the overall setup suits both short breaks and longer stays in the area.

What guests say
The Tufton Arms Hotel is a characterful coaching inn that combines warm service, strong food and wine, and the flexibility to support business stays as well as leisure visits. Stayed overnight as a business group of four while working locally and hosted a friendly business dinner for seven in the bar and restaurant. The hotel sits on the Market Square in a beautiful historic building and has a relaxed, traditional feel throughout. From our early arrival first thing in the morning, the hosts and proprietor were welcoming and attentive, and we were well looked after for the duration. Rooms were comfortable and well-appointed. Service was practical as well as friendly. We were thoughtfully offered lifts to and from a farmhouse venue some distance away for a daytime workshop, which removed a logistical headache and reflects the hotel’s customer-focused approach. Dinner in the restaurant worked very well for our small group. The team’s knowledge and enthusiasm for local produce comes through in the menu, and the wine offering is a standout. The proprietor sources parcels at auction, so there is an unusually wide choice of interesting bottles alongside the main list. The bar is comfortable and made an easy setting for hosting guests. Breakfast the next morning was freshly cooked with excellent ingredients and plenty of choice. Soft scrambled eggs, proper back bacon and good toast set the tone for a high-quality start to the day. Overall hospitality was excellent. A warm, enthusiastic team, a characterful building, strong food and wine, and a genuinely helpful approach throughout. Would return in a flash. Stayed here accidentally, not knowing about the horse fair. But what a great little hotel. Breakfast top notch!

The owner could not have been more helpful. An excellent place to recuperate after a 20 mile day on the Pennine way. All of the staff were friendly and attentive. The owner very kindly ran me back to the start of the way after breakfast. Would certainly recommend and stay again.

Had a lovely 2 night break. The staff were all friendly and the rooms clean. The bathroom looked new. The hotel is old and has creaking floors but that just adds to its charm. Our room #10 was at the front of the hotel. It has a large window letting plenty of light in. The bed was so comfortable we had 2 great nights sleep. The furniture was dated but it was in keeping with the character of the hotel. We had a drink in the bar which wasn't over priced. Breakfast was hot and plentiful. 1st morning we had the full English, eggs, sausage bacon, mushrooms, beans and black pudding. Great choice if you didn't want a full English. Sour dough bread with salmon and scrambled eggs was a lovely light breakfast on our 2nd morning.
