A decent Coventry focused museum close to the Cathedral with a nominal entrance fee. Very local centric but still with interest for a tourist, as you can easily do it all in an hour. Good art selection with a few galleries with temporary exhibitions. It would have been better to see some Jaguar references, more about the great music Coventry has given the world & a rubbish sweep around the building would help.

Absolutely cracked it with the Commoners exhibition as part of the Biennial. We were so impressed we bought the brilliant accompany book. Massively under appreciated with some fabulous exhibitions. Worth every penny of the annual subscription. Both the Herbert and the Transport Museum have two of the best museum gift shops in the country. The only downside now is the chronic lighting in the History Gallery which needs a complete rethink. Artifacts hidden by signage. Gloomy display cabinets with reflection from the now defunct entrance and reception area. What happens there once Dippy's gone home? A space with huge potential. p.s. I still can't work out where the 450yr old School Library is 🤔

We had a really nice time looking around. They have lots of industrial artifacts as well as domestic articles from over the centuries. My husband particularly enjoyed the special exhibit on the history of South Asian immigrants to the UK over the years. Some nice medieval paintings on display in such a way that you can get a close look at them, which was nice. Lots of textiles; clothing, and ornate ribbons woven with Jacquard looms, as well as a loom itself with the control cards which were the predecessors to punch cards and paper tape in early automated machine tools and digital computers.

The museum was pointed out to me by my city walk tour guide, and I'm so glad she did, because otherwise I would surely have missed out on a great experience! The museum houses an eclectic mix of old and modern paintings, natural world exhibits and items from Coventry's past, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed! Well worth a visit when you have 1-2 hours to spend when in Coventry. I also asked to see the Medieval Undercroft below the building, though my expectations may have been a bit too high. My guide also seemed slightly reluctant to have to take me down there and seemingly wanted to get it over with as quickly as possible. But overall, an excellent visit.
