The Jacobite Steam Train offers a breathtaking journey through the Scottish Highlands that is truly unforgettable. I highly recommend booking your tickets well in advance, as summer slots fill up incredibly quickly. We opted for First Class, which was an excellent experience; the train was not at capacity, allowing us the comfort and privacy of our own four-seat compartment. Anyone that loves harry Potter will love the train ride! Guests are welcome to bring their own food and beverages, and there is a convenient store located directly across from the Fort William station where you can easily pick up snacks, wine, or refreshments for the ride. While the carriages are vintage rather than ultra-modern, they are comfortable, well-maintained, and full of character. The service was professional, and the train operated strictly on schedule. For the stop in Mallaig, I suggest planning for a meal before your return trip. We hiked to the top of the hill for a spectacular view of the harbor, and there are many wonderful local spots for fresh seafood. We enjoyed excellent fish and chips at The Fishmarket Seafood Deli, paired with a local Sky Pale Ale. Finally, don't miss the chance to relax with a glass of wine or some local gin on board during your trip back—it’s the perfect way to soak in the scenery.

There was a delay to the departure of 1hr which was not the fault of the organisers. This meant we were unable to get off the train at Glenfinnan Station on route and had less time in Mallaig. This did not spoil the experience which was excellent. The mountain views and the Glenfinnan viaduct in particular were amazing. There was so much to see. I would highly recommend this experience.

The Jacobite Steam Train runs along the West Highland Line from Fort William to Mallaig, and is one of the best train journeys in Scotland. This incredible route takes in 84 miles (135 kilometers) of scenic views across lochs, mountains, and sea. Along the way, the steam train crosses the 21 arches of the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct — a masterpiece of Victorian engineering that was featured in the Harry Potter films. Riding the Jacobite Steam Train across the viaduct is as close as you can get to the real world Hogwarts Express.

Disappointing experience today riding the Jacobite Steam Train. It’s now a completely watered down experience of the excitement it once was. I’m not a crazy Harry potter fan, but I went into this experience open minded and excited to partake in the atmosphere. Luckily, the steam train was running, but all of the carriages were swapped out and so instead of a nice vintage feel, you get seats and floors that are reminiscent of those paper cups from the 80s. No biggie, I thought. At least the train ride is scenic…. If you’re even able to see anything. The windows are so badly scratched that you can’t see anything outside. I imagine rainy days like these make the visibility even poorer. No photos you take will even be viable. On top of that, they no longer run the Harry pottery themed trolley with chocolate frogs and snacks. The closest thing they had was a butter beer hot chocolate and the rest was basic water, soda or tea. Luckily I had bought a chocolate frog at the train station before I boarded. Idk. For the amount of money taking this train costs, they are scamming a lot of people who expect one thing, and are given something vastly different.

People say this train journey offers amazing scenery, especially the Glenfinnan Viaduct, and the staff are friendly, informative, and helpful.

Other reviews mention the experience can be overpriced and the steam engine can be replaced by a diesel train without notice.
