About Peterstone Court Country House & Spa

Peterstone Court sits in the hamlet of Llanhamlach, about three miles east of Brecon on the road towards Crickhowell, with the Usk valley in front and the main Beacons ridge behind. The Georgian house looks out directly at Pen y Fan and Cribyn, which is the single best thing about it. Inside it is relaxed rather than formal, with sofas, log fires and a bar that locals use, and the owners describe it as a restaurant with rooms as much as a hotel.

There are twelve bedrooms in the main house and the converted stable block. Main house rooms are larger, several with four-posters and free-standing baths, and the best of them face the mountains. Stable rooms are quieter and better for dogs, and there are family options. Decor is comfortable country rather than fashion-led, and the walls of the older building mean some rooms carry sound more than others. Wi-Fi, tea trays and good bathrooms are standard throughout.

The spa is small but genuinely useful: an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, gym and a handful of treatment rooms, plus a heated outdoor pool and hot tub on the terrace that gets the mountain view. The kitchen takes lamb, beef and pork from the family farm at Glanusk and builds most menus around it, with Sunday lunch particularly busy. Afternoon tea on the terrace is a fixture in summer.

It suits walkers who want a bath and a decent dinner at the end of the day, couples after a spa break with scenery attached, and families who need a hotel that will not mind muddy boots. It is a popular wedding venue, so ask about bookings if you want a quiet weekend. Parking is free and on site, and Brecon town is a five-minute drive.

Had the pleasure of photographing a wedding at Peterstone Court this summer and what a day it was! The bridal party had a beautiful spacious suite to get ready in with wonderful views of the mountains and the outdoor pool where we watched the groom and groomsmen enjoying to its fullest! The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive to the couples needs and helped the day run smoothly. The building is beautiful and the ballroom was a real show stopper for the couples reception. All in all Peterstone court is a fabulous place to start your life as a married couple.

The building looks impressive when you drive in, but the hotel is old and dated. Poorly finished to start with and very badly maintained. It needs a major refurbishment, especially the bathrooms where the shower doesn’t drain properly and the metal fittings are rusted. The water also periodically goes to scalding hot, mid shower, and once mid shampoo. The bathroom switch is a string attached to the ceiling, which is brown at the end where you have to touch it. Rooms and bathrooms are not clean. Dirty mug and spoon in our room from previous guests. Sofas were also visibly dirty with dirt dust and hair which we cleaned out ourselves. The bed was 2 mattresses put together and made up to look like a larger bed, but actually had a gap in the middle. This is cheeky because the images of the room on the website make it appear to look otherwise, but on arrival you arrive that they are not. (In hindsight, they cleverly don’t specify bed size on the website for these particular rooms). Service is friendly and attentive, though not enough to make up for the other issues. Not a five star at all. Would not recommend.

Upon arrival, the hotel and grounds looked very impressive. We stayed in a Stable Room, which is dog-friendly and conveniently located for access to the car and the gardens. Unfortunately, I found the room to be quite dirty, including the hall, stairs, and blinds. In my opinion, it was in need of refurbishment and did not meet the standard expected of a 5-star establishment. The room was also very hot and, despite adjusting the thermostat, the temperature did not improve. We were unable to open the windows, which made the situation worse. Security lights outside our room lit up the space throughout the night each time they were activated. Additionally, the soundproofing seemed inadequate, as we could clearly hear our neighbours returning late, singing and talking well into the night. As we had our dog with us, we took her out regularly, but we noticed a significant amount of dog waste on the grass near the Stable Rooms. This was particularly hazardous in the dark. On a positive note, we had dinner in the hotel, where the service staff were very attentive. The food was excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal.

My son and now daughter in law, got married here recently, what an incredible venue. It has a beautiful small church next door, only a couple of minutes to walk too. The hotel itself was lovely, great bar and outdoor seating areas, a snug library/games room. Beautiful large bedrooms, and fantastic main room for weddings/parties etc. I have to say the level of service delivered by the team was incredible, nothing was too much, they delivered everything across the two days, big shout out to Dawn, Sharon, isabella, Leo and Grace, to mention a few. Everyone made it special, well done 👏👏👏
