A campsite near Brecon
About Pytingwyn Woods
This four-acre wildlife haven splits neatly between grassland and ancient woodland, with the river Honddu forming one boundary – bring your rod if you fancy trout fishing. The woodland itself contains remnants of a medieval road that once linked Brecon to Builth Wells, and you'll find interesting plant species throughout. It's a genuinely rural setup: firepits and campfires are encouraged, tree hammocks and aerial tents welcome, and the owner happily hosts large groups, dogs and those who want to sleep under the stars.
Brecon is five minutes' drive for shops and galleries, while Pen Y Fan lies 15 minutes away. Closer still, a one-hour circular walk climbs to Pen-y-Crug, an Iron Age hillfort with sweeping Usk Valley views. Public footpaths thread through farmland and woods into town, or you can stroll the Usk promenade and Brecon Canal. With composting loos, no mains water and just a handful of pitches, this feels properly off-grid – though a tiny bit of rustic compromise comes with the territory.

What visitors say
Simple campsite where only touch of civilisation is one compostable toilet. Nearly wild camping, with pitches on field and woods. There is clean small river (or large stream) and it's only source of water Beautiful, peaceful place.
