Camping in Brecon

24 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks

Brecon's setting makes it one of the best-positioned towns in Wales for camping, but the ground and the weather both demand respect. The National Park's terrain ranges from gentle valley pasture along the Usk, ideal for a straightforward tent pitch, to the exposed, peaty moorland of the high Beacons, where the ground holds water for days after rain and conditions on the ridges can shift from calm to gale-force within the hour. Established campsites cluster in the valleys around Brecon, Talybont-on-Usk, Libanus and the Usk Reservoir, many with good facilities and direct access to walking trails, and these are by far the easiest and most reliable option for tents, campervans and touring caravans alike.

Wild camping is a different matter, and it is worth being clear-eyed about the law: unlike Scotland, Wales has no general right to wild camp, and pitching a tent on private land without the landowner's permission is technically trespass, even on open hillside that looks unclaimed. In practice, a longstanding informal tolerance exists on the high, open mountain land within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park — broadly above the highest fenced enclosure, well away from farmhouses, roads and popular summits like Pen y Fan — provided campers arrive late, leave early, camp in small groups, and leave completely no trace. The National Park Authority has also worked with a number of local farmers and landowners who are happy to permit camping on their land, which is the only way to camp with genuine certainty of permission; check the Authority's website before setting out rather than assuming a spot is fair game.

Ground conditions favour a three- or four-season tent with a solid flysheet and decent guylines — the Beacons are notably windier and wetter than lowland Wales, and even midsummer nights on the tops can drop close to freezing. May, June and September tend to offer the best balance of settled weather, dry ground and manageable midge activity; July and August are warmer but busier and more prone to sudden thunderstorms rolling in off the Bristol Channel. For those who want the views without the logistics, glamping has grown steadily around Brecon in recent years — shepherd's huts, yurts and heated wooden pods are dotted through the valleys around Libanus, Talybont and Felin Fach, several with direct sightlines to Pen y Fan, offering a warm, dry alternative when the forecast turns.
