Breedon on the Hill sits inside the National Forest, the Midlands-wide project turning former coalfield land into a patchwork of new woodland, farmland and country parks, and that mix makes for gentle, varied camping country rather than dramatic wilderness. As with everywhere else in England, wild camping is not legal here without the express permission of the landowner, so a pitch on a proper campsite or farm site is the way to go. Several small, family-run campsites and farm campgrounds operate in the villages and countryside around Breedon, offering grass pitches for tents alongside space for campervans and motorhomes, and a growing number also offer glamping options such as bell tents, shepherd's huts or pods for visitors who want a softer introduction to sleeping outdoors.
The terrain here is easy rolling farmland and young forest rather than anything rugged, so it suits family camping and short breaks more than serious backcountry trips. Facilities on local sites tend to be simple but well kept, and the flat, quiet lanes around the village are good for cycling or walking straight from your pitch. Late spring to early autumn is the best season to camp, when the surrounding National Forest plantations are green and walkable and Cloud Wood's wildflowers and orchids are at their best; the ground can turn heavy after wet weather at other times of year, as is typical of the Midlands clay. Many sites are seasonal, opening from around Easter through to September or October, so it is worth checking dates before planning a visit outside the summer months.
Because Breedon itself is so small, camping here works best as a quiet, low-cost base for exploring the wider National Forest and the East Midlands beyond, rather than a destination with camping facilities of its own. A pitch within a few miles of the village puts the hilltop church, Cloud Wood and the walking country around Melbourne and Ashby-de-la-Zouch all within easy reach, while staying close enough to East Midlands Airport and the M1/M42 to suit travellers passing through the region. Booking ahead for summer weekends is sensible, as the area's campsites are popular with both National Forest visitors and East Midlands Airport travellers looking for a low-cost overnight stop.
