Just two rooms make up Riverside Cottage, a small and unfussy base in Brendon, Devon, right on the doorstep of Exmoor National Park. The scale keeps things simple: guests get a quiet, personal stay rather than a big hotel setup, with a garden and outdoor seating to sit out in when the weather allows.

There's a kitchen for self-catering, and pets are welcome, which suits the walking-and-dogs crowd this part of Devon tends to attract. Reception is staffed around the clock, and while there's no restaurant on site, places to eat are nearby. Fishing, cycling and walking are all within easy reach, making it a practical stop for exploring Exmoor's moorland and river valleys.

Parking needs a little planning: cars can be loaded and unloaded at the cottage itself, then moved further down the road where it widens, with extra space available at the village hall via an honesty box. It's a small extra step, but one that fits the low-key, rural character of the place.
