About Amherst Hotel

Amherst Hotel suits anyone after a straightforward, affordable base in Brighton rather than a polished city break. With just 10 rooms and 24 hour reception, it works well for solo travellers or couples wanting privacy and flexibility without paying hotel rates, and it's within easy walking distance of the seafront.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms and free WiFi, keeping things simple and functional. It's worth knowing that some guests have found the rooms could do with more upkeep, and that staff aren't always as helpful as they could be, so this is a place for travellers who prioritise location and price over polish.

The setting does a lot of the work: pubs, bars, restaurants and entertainment are all close by, and the coast offers watersports and fishing for those who want to get outdoors. Brighton Centre is a nearby point of interest, and the wider town is under a mile and a half away, making Amherst Hotel a reasonable option for exploring the city on foot.

Absolutely TERRIBLE experience. This place was a complete disappointment and I will never come back. The room was extremely old and in poor condition. The bathroom and toilet were very dirty and outdated, exactly as shown in the photos I have attached, far below any acceptable standard The room was also freezing cold. Despite being told that the rooms are maintained at 25 degrees, there was no working heating at all. After repeatedly contacting booking website and sending multiple emails, we were eventually given an extra heater, which clearly shows the heating system was not functioning. There was no proper reception or staff available to report issues, which is unbelievable for a place mentioned as a hotel. The only person who answered the phone was very unhelpful, said the problems were not their responsibility, and even spoke to us in a rude tone, warning us not to call again regarding the heating. Overall, this was one of the worst stays we have ever experienced. Poor communication, misleading information, lack of basic facilities, and extremely unprofessional behaviour made this stay completely unacceptable. We strongly do not recommend this place.

Might be no use writing a review as all the other comments seem to say the same things. Rooms were okay, a bit dirty, location was good. Got woken up by builders outside my window which was not great. When I made the booking I asked if there was early check in purely to leave my bags behind, no answer. On arrival I still hadn’t received an entry code at 3:15 I spent a good 15 minutes contacting the booking agency which told me to call the property directly so I did, only to be told “you should have sorted this out before your arrival” granted the code was supposedly only to be sent at 3. He then told me to call the booking platform which I assured I did but told me to call them. He eventually found the code, and said “don’t call again, I will not answer”. What is the point in having a customer care number if the representative has no interest in helping customers? I’m not the first person to encounter this upon reading other reviews so why is it still happening?? I understand the “low prices, low standards” but basic necessities like being kind and understanding costs nothing. Wouldn’t recommend staying here, purely incase of an emergency or if you need anything there’s no one willing to help. Especially if traveling solo!

We had a very disappointing stay due to extremely poor communication and unacceptable conditions. The room itself was very old, unclean, and far below standard, and no proper heating. Staff were unhelpful and dismissive when contacted. Overall, this place is not worth the price—you can easily find much better accommodation for the same cost. I do not recommend it.

Great location and easy to call someone for key code to get in. Room was a good size but wasn’t the cleanest very dusty and the kitchen area cupboards was dirty. Bathroom could have done with a good clean as well. Bedding and towels clean tho

People say this hotel offers a private space that's a step up from a hostel, is reasonably priced, and is located just steps away from the seaside.

Other reviews mention the staff can be unhelpful and the rooms can be neglected.
