About Artist Residence Brighton
Artist Residence began here, in a Grade II listed townhouse at the head of Regency Square facing the remains of the West Pier. The story is well told and happens to be true: the owners advertised free board for artists in exchange for decorating the rooms, and the results - murals, salvaged furniture, hand-painted walls - gave the place a character no design consultancy would have produced. It has since expanded into the house next door and now runs to twenty-seven rooms.
No two rooms are alike. They range from small attic rooms to larger sea-view rooms and suites at the front, with original artwork in every one, reclaimed and vintage furniture, and bathrooms that are contemporary rather than quirky. The building's Regency proportions mean high ceilings and tall windows on the main floors, and the front rooms look straight down the square to the sea.
Blake's Bistro occupies the ground floor and functions as an all-day room - coffee and pastries in the morning, brunch, then bistro cooking and cocktails in the evening - and the breakfast has a following of its own. There is also a small bar and a set of comfortably scruffy sitting rooms that make it easy to stay in when the weather turns.
Regency Square is a practical base as well as a handsome one, because the large underground car park sits beneath the square itself, which is close to unique in central Brighton. The beach is two minutes away, The Lanes about ten, and North Laine fifteen. It suits couples and design-minded travellers; families are less well served, and the stairs in a listed townhouse are what they are.

What guests say
An extremely cozy hotel with gorgeous vintage style and very gentle hotel manager. Our original ordered Airbnb location did not confirm the booking, thus Karma gave us the hint to find a place at Artist Residence. Unfortunately it was only one night and one breakfast we could enjoy. But this lovely hotel deserves to be booked for a longer stay. By the way, perfectly located with view to the beach. Fantastic.

What an excellent stay at the artists residence! I came down with a couple of friends for a show at the dome and from the moment we arrived Samuel made us feel so welcome and valued, nothing was too much trouble! The room was spacious and clean and loved the feel throughout the hotel. Jake brought us picantes to our room while we got ready which was a lovely touch! All in all, a great stay, we’ll be back!

I recently stayed here with two friends and from the moment we arrived we were made to feel completely welcome. Jake looked after us beautifully, showing us to our room and preparing delicious picantes that he kindly delivered to us — a lovely touch. The room itself was perfect for three people: spacious, comfortable and complete with a relaxing lounge area. The shower was excellent as well. In the morning, Samuel greeted us with warmth and energy, ensuring our breakfast experience was seamless and enjoyable. We truly felt that nothing was ever too much. A wonderful stay - we’re already looking forward to our next visit!

This is my favorite hotel. Everyone working here is so outwardly kind, charming and delightful to be around. The building is beautiful, the art well curated and the view of the ocean is amazing. Can’t want to come back every time
