What diners say
🚇 Chancery Lane 🍺 £7.70 Mahou Tucked away in a narrow backstreet in Holborn, you’ll find 26 Furnival Street. The nearest Tube is Chancery Lane. While the building you see today was built in 1901, a public house has occupied this site since at least 1541—making it one of the oldest licensed pub sites in the City of London. Originally known as The Castle Tavern, the name was later shortened to The Castle. After closing its doors in 2015 and undergoing a few years of redevelopment in and around the pub, it finally reopened under its current name, 26 Furnival Street. This is a good-sized establishment that has a modern, contemporary, and industrial feel. The bar area is laid out in an "L" shape with the servery on the right, the main bar area around it, and a dining area at the back. The decor consists of boarded and mosaic-tiled floors, panelled and exposed-brick walls, contemporary high and low seating, and industrial ducting and lighting. The beer line-up is all keg and offers a selection of well-known beers plus a couple of independent brewery options. I decided on a Mahou; my pint was great, though the price point was a bit punchy. The food menu is a mix of Mediterranean-style dishes, pub classics, and a range of pizzas—the fish and chips costs £18.50. I arrived at 6:30 pm on a warm and pleasant Wednesday evening in April. The pub was fairly quiet inside but was packed outside with a good crowd enjoying a post-work tipple. I plotted up inside and quaffed my pint while listening to the superb '80s soundtrack. The service was on point; the team on duty were welcoming and courteous. Great to see this historic site still trading and providing a place to socialise for punters working in the surrounding offices. I enjoyed my time here; there was a nice buzz about the place, although my pint was a little pricey. All told, it’s not my kinda pub in terms of decor, as I like things a little more traditional, but the location and hospitality were a good offset. Just keep in mind that 26 Furnival Street is closed at weekends, so choose your time to visit. 📅 8th April 2026

Thanks to Tomas and his team who accommodated 14 people for lunch with no warning & no booking! Welcomed us in and moved the tables to seat us all together. Good varied menu but highly recommend the pizzas and burgers - and really reasonably priced for central London. Always a good atmosphere here, whether a quick drink, lunch, drinks party after work or watching the World Cup - it’s a popular spot.
