Paper Mill Island sits halfway along the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation, where the towpath runs for 14 miles between Chelmsford and the coast at Maldon. Island Lodge occupies the water's edge here, with a private mooring and direct access onto the river—ideal if you want to launch a kayak, canoe or SUP straight from the garden. The enclosed rear patio faces the water, and from inside you can watch boat traffic navigate the lock gates or simply listen to the river.

The whole ground-floor property is yours alone. Open-plan living space combines a sitting area, dining space and kitchen, with French doors opening onto the garden. A double bedroom and ensuite shower room complete the layout. The kitchen has an electric oven and hob for proper cooking. Heating, electricity, wi-fi and towels are included, along with a welcome pack. One car can park on site. Dogs are welcome.

The nearby tearooms are a short walk across the lock, and the river itself offers boat hire for those without their own craft. Walking routes follow the towpath in both directions through the Chelmer Valley countryside. Smoking is not permitted inside.
