About Mill Hotel & Spa
Chester's historic centre sits within easy walking distance of the canal, and it's along this waterway on Milton Street that you'll find the Mill Hotel & Spa. The hotel offers a practical base for exploring the city, with free on-site parking making it straightforward to arrive by car despite the central location.
There are 132 rooms in total, and while some are showing their age, they remain comfortable and well-equipped. Breakfast is a highlight, and the bar is reasonably priced, making it easy to eat and drink without leaving the building. Facilities extend well beyond the rooms, with an indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room forming the core of the spa offer, plus a gym for those wanting a proper workout. A garden, meeting rooms, lift access and free WiFi round out the practical amenities.
Staff are consistently described as friendly and helpful, which counts for a lot after a day on your feet exploring the city's historic streets and the canal towpath nearby. It's a hotel that suits both leisure breaks and more functional stays, with the spa facilities offering a proper reason to linger rather than just pass through.
What guests say
Partner & I spent 2 nights at the Mill to explore Chester. The hotel is ideally situated by the canal and is a short walk to the city centre. Hotel has a good car park costing £12 per day and which has security fencing around it. Room was a good size and nicely equipped with kettle, tea etc. We had a shower room. Liked the free access to swimming pool, the sauna and steam room and jacuzzi. There’s a fully equipped gym. Breakfast was good with usual full English being available along with grapefruit, croissants, toast etc. There was no fish alternative like kippers or haddock. Breakfast room was crammed with people so everyone must have thought it good value for the money. Would go back to the place as it’s good.

Don't be fooled by the 'Spa' in the title - there's sadly nothing luxurious about this hotel. It's incredibly dated, with lots of stairs of you are in rooms over the bridge. I was staying here for my 50th birthday which I had noted in the booking but not even an acknowledgement of that - wasn't expecting anything freebie but even a note in the room would have been nice or maybe just a nicer room. We got one next to the dual carriageway. Awful. Room was huge but not in a good way - tv over the other side of the room so couldn't watch from bed, only other option was to use a hideous uncomfortable weird sofa bed that didn't look like it'd be cleaned in decades. Room was also boiling hot with no air con and this was only April in admittedly very warm weather but the only relief was a desk fan in the wardrobe. I'd dread to be here in summer. You had to book in for breakfast ahead of time at check in but the system was weird - one guy checking guests, taking them to table, giving them the spiel, taking tea orders then delivering the order to the kitchen then going back to do all that for the next guests. No wonder there was always a queue! Just let guests come when they want! Breakfast buffet was small and not great - not the worst but the crockery was old, scratched - everything just felt dated in this place. The pool area is nice with good facilities and the location is fantastic in the City center but I wouldn't stay again. Nice staff and ut was cheap but I'd have been annoyed if I had paid more than I did.

A fantastic location, a solid breakfast and a lovely spa bring this up from a lower score, because for all it's great bits, it has some downsides. For starters, the receptionist who checked us in must have been having a bad day, because she was as short with us as if I'd just told her I reversed into her car. I must add, every other staff encounter was FANTASTIC, especially the spa and breakfast team, but when that's your first interaction, it really didn't get us excited. We stayed in room 319 which was sold as a Business Executive room. Spoiler alert, it was about as executive as a Citroen Saxo with no air-con. The images attached show the state of the room as we checked in. Unfortunately, we didn't complain, as I don't expect they'd have replaced a worn window, a stained blind or repainted the wall, but it gave an atmosphere of "I'm worn out" about the room. Additionally, no aircon, and the smallest desk fan on 8,000rpm all night did not alleviate the sauna style conditions at night. During the day, it may have been a walk in oven. Thankfully, the bed sheets were clean. I would say it is overpriced for the experience we got in the room, but the access to a cosy swimming pool (must add it had no deep end, but this didn't matter to me) and a great jacuzzi/sauna room probably bring the value back to where it is priced at. If your priority is location and just somewhere to rest your head, then this is a good place to go (albeit I would seriously consider borrowing your dogs cool matt for the room if you plan on travelling when it's over 18 degrees Celsius). If you prioritise a "bougie" experience, look elsewhere.

When we first got to the hotel the reception and hotel looked nice. The room needs a lot of updating and the bathroom needs a major renovation. I would expect a lovely bathroom when I am paying £156 for a night. Instead we had a shower than runs off the bath taps. There was a lot of mould behind the taps and the sealant was all mouldy aswell. This hotel is not luxury at all. The windows have a locking mechanism for safety. However, we had to ring reception in the early hours to ask if they could take the locking mechanism off as it felt like we were in Egypt. The day we were leaving we noticed the state of the mattress it was covered in a lot of large stains. If I had noticed this previously I would have requested a room change. The extractor fan had also blown a lot of dust all over the top of the toilet. The breakfast was average and needs more selection. I am really disappointed in the level of cleanliness, the staff need retraining. We definitely will not be returning.
