About The Boathouse Inn and Riverside Rooms

The Groves puts The Boathouse Inn and Riverside Rooms within easy reach of Chester's riverside walks, with golf, fishing and watersports all nearby, plus pubs and restaurants scattered along the same stretch for evenings out without needing the car. Free on-site parking makes it a practical base for exploring further afield too.

The hotel itself has 21 en-suite rooms, including accessible options, with drinks available in-room and free WiFi throughout. There's a restaurant and bar on site serving hearty roasts and fresh seafood, and breakfast gets particular praise from those who stay. Outdoor seating makes the most of the riverside setting, and reception is staffed around the clock. It's worth noting that some rooms have been reported as tired in places, so this is a stay built more around the food, the location and the welcome than polished interiors.

Staff are consistently described as friendly and attentive, and the combination of good value, riverside views and free parking makes it an easy choice for a Chester visit. An electric vehicle charge point is also available on site.

I booked here as we were visiting Chester for the day for my partners birthday and it didn't disappoint. I asked for specific table with a view and we got just that. The food was beautiful 10/10 , but what really stood out was the service. We were served by Lexie who arrived at our table with a smile and we were served our food and drinks in perfect time. We loved it here and will definitely be visiting again during our next visit to Chester. Good Customer service is what always brings us back and this place definitely has that. 😊 Thank you

Reservation today for Sunday lunch as a group of 6. We have all been here on numerous occasions and have always rated the food and excellent service, until today! The young bloke serving us ( from reading other recent reviews I would say his name probably started with a C), was a disgrace to the company! Food order when arrived looked ok apart from a wrong order of peas for my gf fish and chips, the fish was fine, the chips awful, dry and a lot of black bits. None of the rest of the party were impressed with their dishes either, but the review is mainly about the service. On finishing our mains the waiter came over and asked us if we wanted the bill, no mention of another drink or the dessert menu, when we asked for the dessert menu and more drinks he seemed visibly put out and the one dessert we ordered was literally dumped in the middle of the table with the spoon. 2 minutes later he was back saying again do you want the bill now ,even though we’d just got another round of drinks! At this point we agreed to get the bill as we’d had enough of the shocking service! We had reserved the table and the place wasn’t busy for food and we had been there just on an hr ( I did ask the waiter if it was busy going forward but was just told ‘ I don’t know’. ) so there was no excuse! Ruined what should have been a pleasant afternoon by a rude, incompetent member of staff. Won’t be recommending!

We were on holiday and all 4 of us are from the lunchtime menu. 3 courses for just under £20. We were amazed to see seabass on the lunch menu. It was cooked to perfection and piping hot. There veg was tasty and toasted new potatoes were fresh and crispy. We had starters of mushrooms and prawn cocktails. Both were well presented and tastwd fabulous. Puddings were the vegan doughnuts (vegan ice-cream was lovely and creamy) Two of us had crumble and custard which was served well with crunchy topping and thick creamy custard. All the staff that passed smiled and Cleared plates promptly. Mum was permitted to taste some beer samples before she ordered her preference. Our server was a lovely girl with red hair. We forgot to ask her name but felt she needed a mention as she was cheerful & efficient. We all agreed that we hadn't had such a lovely meal for such good value in ages. We also noticed that all three staff were pleasant, friendly and attentive. The setting over the water was a lovely finishing touch. Definitely worth a visit if your are in Chester.

We paid over £250 for a double room, and unfortunately the experience fell far below what we’ve had here previously. The room was thick with dust, as shown in the photos, and there was no air conditioning. We’ve stayed here several times and always found it great, so it’s disappointing to see standards drop so significantly. I don’t usually leave negative reviews, and I actually gave the hotel a chance to rectify things first, but the response I received was dismissive and really disappointing. When we checked out, no one asked how our stay was, and when I raised the cleanliness issues in the email review request, it was more or less brushed off. I understand prices increase during the races, but doubling the rate only makes sense if the quality matches the cost and this time it simply didn’t. The location is fantastic, which is why we’ve returned more than once, but the condition of the room really let the stay down. There were also holes in the plumbing under the sink that should have been properly covered. At this price point, basic cleanliness and maintenance should not be an issue. Being told that there’s no air con because we booked a “standard room” and that it would cost £50+ extra just to have air conditioning is unreasonable for a hotel charging this much. Overall, it was very disappointing, and the way the feedback was handled felt rude and dismissive. The location is great, yes, but there are plenty of other places with better standards and service for a fraction of the price.
