Condover
Timber-framed history in the Shropshire countryside

Condover is a small village in Shropshire, tucked into rolling farmland around five miles south of Shrewsbury. It has a history stretching back to Saxon times, when it was recorded as a rural manor, and today over half of the village is a designated conservation area thanks to its unusually high concentration of listed buildings — more than forty in total, including several rare cruck-framed cottages and black-and-white timbered houses.
At the heart of the village stands Condover Hall, a Grade I listed Elizabethan sandstone mansion often described as the grandest manor house in Shropshire. Built in the 1580s for Thomas Owen, a local MP and Recorder of Shrewsbury, it passed through the Owen family for more than 300 years before serving as an RAF officers' mess during the Second World War and later becoming an RNIB residential college. The village church, St Andrew & St Mary, is one of the largest country churches in the county, rebuilt in the 1660s after its original tower collapsed.
Getting to Condover
Condover sits just off the A49, about five miles south of Shrewsbury, making it an easy drive from the town and from the wider Shropshire road network. Shrewsbury railway station has regular services from Birmingham, Chester and Wales, and from there Condover is a short taxi or car journey. There is no direct rail or regular bus service into the village itself, so a car is the most practical way to explore the surrounding countryside.
Best time to visit Condover
Spring and summer show off the timber-framed cottages and churchyard at their best, and longer days make it easier to combine a visit with walks in the Shropshire Hills. Autumn brings good colour to the surrounding farmland and woodland, while winter visits are quieter, with the church open only during daylight hours.
Where to stay in Condover
All hotels in Condover →About staying in Condover
Condover is not a hotel destination in its own right — it is a small, largely residential village — but its position just south of Shrewsbury makes it a handy base for exploring this corner of Shropshire. Shrewsbury itself, a short drive north, has a good range of hotels, inns and guesthouses within its historic centre, from traditional coaching inns to modern chain hotels, all within easy reach of the castle, abbey and riverside walks along the Severn. Staying in or near Shrewsbury also puts you within striking distance of the Shropshire Hills, so you can combine a comfortable town base with day trips out to the Long Mynd, Stiperstones and Wenlock Edge.
For something quieter, the villages and countryside around Condover have scattered farmhouse bed and breakfasts and rural guesthouses, though options directly in Condover itself are limited. Anyone planning a stay in this area should expect a peaceful, rural experience rather than a bustling tourist scene — the appeal here is Condover Hall, the parish church, and the surrounding Shropshire farmland rather than a wide choice of places to stay. Booking ahead is sensible, particularly during the summer months when Shrewsbury's own hotels can fill up with visitors heading into the hills.

Camping in Condover
All campsites in Condover →About camping in Condover
Condover lies in gently rolling Shropshire farmland, and while the village itself has no campsite, the wider area south towards the Shropshire Hills offers plenty of scope for a proper countryside camping trip. As with anywhere in England, wild camping without the landowner's permission is illegal, so it is always worth booking an established site or asking permission directly rather than pitching up on private land.
The terrain around Condover ranges from flat, easy farmland close to the village to the steeper, more dramatic slopes of the Long Mynd and Stiperstones further south — both popular with campers who want to combine a pitch with serious hill walking. Closer to Shrewsbury, sites tend to be more sheltered and family-friendly, with easy access back into the town for supplies and a change of scenery. Ground conditions in this part of Shropshire can turn heavy after wet weather, so a site with reasonable drainage is worth seeking out if you are pitching a tent rather than towing a caravan or motorhome.
The best time to camp here is late spring through to early autumn, when the days are long enough to make the most of walks in the Shropshire Hills and the ground is at its driest. Summer weekends around the school holidays are the busiest, so booking ahead is sensible if you have a particular site in mind. Spring brings fresh green farmland and quieter sites, while a well-chosen autumn weekend can reward campers with good colour in the surrounding woodland, provided you are prepared for cooler nights.
For those who would rather have a roof over their heads without giving up the countryside setting, glamping options — shepherd's huts, pods and similar — are increasingly common across Shropshire, offering a comfortable alternative within easy reach of Condover, Shrewsbury and the hills beyond. Whichever way you choose to stay, the appeal of camping near Condover is the same: quiet, rural Shropshire scenery with the historic market town of Shrewsbury never far away.
