About Shoulthwaite Farm CL
Shoulthwaite Farm CL is a campground in Keswick, positioned for serious walkers. The main draw is immediate access to some of the Lake District's most demanding fell routes, including Scafell Pike. Parking is available on site for £5 a day, and there is a car park just across the way for those needing additional space.
Facilities are basic: toilets and hot showers (£1 per use). Reviews note the upkeep of these amenities can be inconsistent. The site suits people who are here primarily for the mountains rather than comfort, and who don't mind a no-frills setup in exchange for being at the trailhead.

What visitors say
Great little campsite in a stunning location. Basic, but functional facilities. £1 for a shower, but get plenty of time and hot water. Shower block locked for cleaning 12 until 4pm. Basic vending machines for hot drinks and snacks. Quiet when we stayed, plenty of choice to pitch. Composting toilets not to everyone's taste, but weren't too bad.

We visited this campsite in late May 2026 for 3 nights. The campsite is situated at top of the picturesque Borrowdale valley. The campsite is on a working farm with sheep and cattle seen on site. We booked online via the website and was unable to find a staff member or owner on arrival. We chose a pitch and set ourselves up. Later we met a staff member who was very friendly and welcoming and provided us with some information about nearby walking routes. The campsite has basic amenities including showers (at a cost of £1 per 5 minutes) and composting toilets. The showers were cleaned daily to a good standard, but at busy times can become rather muddy as expected. The composting toilets were occasionally left without loo roll or rather dirty, and one was missing it's lock for the duration of our stay. The campsite's real draw is it's location. It is located in a relatively quiet part of the lakes but has a regular bus route allowing access to other areas. The campsites location at the top of the Borrowdale valley is perfect for hillwalkers, particularly those wishing to tackle Scafell via the corridor route, Great End, Glaramara, Lingmell, or Great Gable.

Parked here overnight for £10 and found it to be an excellent base for the hikes we had planned in the area. Although we didn't make much use of the facilities, I did visit the toilet once and found it clean and well stocked. It appeared to be a composting toilet, with a simple wooden-framed toilet seat design. There are also coffee and milk/milkshake vending machines on site, which is a nice addition. Overall, it was a convenient and well-maintained place to stay, and I will definitely return.

Location of this campsite is out of this world beautiful, surrounded by stunning nature and breath taking mountains and views. We stayed here in our campervan to climb scarfell pike, which we did and the circular route took you up and back down into the campsite so it was a perfect base location, we took the corridor route which is the 2nd quickest route behind wasdale. The campsite got very very busy and you were very close together, even people still arriving at 1am in the morning, not usually our prefared campsite but to be honest considering the amount of campers it was very calm and quiet at night. I read alot of negative reviews prior to visiting (but i always take them with a pinch of salt) because we all have our own judgement and i like to make my own. Most of the reviews were about the toilet and the skip. Well to be honest it is a back to basic campsite, no fancy gadgets or electric, flushing chains or 5 star showers, but despite the minimalistic of it all it has the basics you need, toilets arnt the nicest things, although i am all for the compost toilet, looking at peoples poo and wee (never mind the smell) just isnt for me, but we had all our facilities in our camper. But the long and short it, just be prepared to rough it and have fun, its not all bad, we have just been programmed to be so domesticated and really its nice to get back to simplicity. There was no flushers in the olden days and humans have still survived 🥰 very laid back campsite. All in all, we had a lovely weekend and we reached our goal and got to the top of scarfell pike. ⛰️
