About Southover Woods
Tucked into quiet Dorset woodland twenty minutes from Dorchester, Southover Woods offers a back-to-basics escape with a proper camping feel. Each pitch comes with its own private fire pit – perfect for evening gatherings under the trees – and there's ample space for groups alongside family pitches. Dogs are welcome to roam, and the atmosphere leans refreshingly low-key, though you'll need to manage without WiFi.
The location puts you within half an hour of Durdle Door and the Jurassic Coast, making it a handy base for exploring Dorset's headline attractions without the coastal price tag. Facilities cover the essentials – showers, toilets, drinking water – but don't expect frills. If you're after a sociable, fire-lit woodland pitch with good access to the coast, this ticks the boxes nicely.

A beautiful spot for a wild camping experience. The views are stunning and very peaceful. We are back for the second time and I would return again. Highly recommended.

This sort of camping isn't for everyone but I enjoyed it! Its basic wild camping with the added bonus of bucket showers and compost loos. I stayed in Hazel Wood, as a solo female camper and my dog. I felt very safe and loved my pitch in the woods. Be warned there is a very steep hill to get all your stuff up. I was glad I brought my own cart because there were no wheelbarrows like the website said (they were in use by other campers and not returned). I was lucky enough to get Hazel Wood to myself the 2nd night, after my neighbours were too hungover and left early. It was much more peaceful after that. It would have been nice if there were more places on site to walk the dog. The woodland trail marked on the map was overgrown and unusable, the rest of the site is taken up by pitches that you cant walk through, however one of the large ones wasn't occupied so I enjoyed walking around the woods there. Overall it's a lovely site, lots of great hidden pitches for large groups to enjoy privately. The communication before hand could be improved. I emailed twice and got no reply. The confirmation email they sent with a link to the map and Information didn't work. However I did receive a text the day before with directions etc and they were quick to respond when I messaged asking about firewood.

Fantastic place at a fantastic price. Proper off grid. Tonnes of space to yourself, not squashed up like most camp sites. I can see why some people left negative reviews, but those negatives are the positives for me. My kids loved camping here. Using the fire pit, cooking over it. Foraging for fire wood. Using the fire to heat water for the showers. Even the toilet over a hole in the ground added to the experience. Showering in an open woodland is a very surreal experience. A word of caution for future campers. The gravel track to the pitches is very bumpy and uneven. Don't bring cars low to the ground. The woodland pitch we stayed at (decanter) was extremely dusty due to the dry conditions. Impossible to stop it getting in your tent, on your clothes etc. my kids went to the shower at the end of the day looking like chimney sweeps. Would stay here again.

I went at the end of September for a short break away from daily grind and it was awesome. I think I was the only person on the whole site as it was getting too cold for normal camping. Luckily I had my hottent with small log burner. The pitches are huge and removed from each other. Drop hole toilets are good for me but not for anyone who's a bit precious! 2 bags of firewood purchased at booking were more than enough for 3 nights of roaring campfire. There is no shop or office so bring what you need. All in all a great off grid site within easy distance of Dorset coast.
