Big Horton

Photo: The Horton Inn

Cranborne Chase and the New Forest lie within reach for days out, while walking country starts practically at the gate. Wimborne's market town sits a short drive away, and sandy beaches are accessible for a seaside trip. The hamlet location keeps things quiet, yet rural attractions and cycle routes are close enough to explore without fuss.

Big Horton is a converted barn with four bedrooms, each with its own shower room, and sleeps up to eight. The heart of the place is a vaulted open-plan living area with a wood burner, large windows onto the garden, and a kitchen arranged for group cooking. A mezzanine snug overlooks the main space, and there's a ground floor toilet for convenience. Beds vary: a double, two king-size and a super-king, with flexible sleeping arrangements available. Electricity, wi-fi and all bed linen and towels come as standard.

Outside, an enclosed garden with patio and outdoor furniture provides a secure, private retreat. There's a dedicated cooking area for alfresco meals, and access to a shared paddock for a picnic or a walk. One dog is welcome. Parking for several cars makes arrivals straightforward. The property is non-smoking throughout.

The rooms are spacious but the shower cubicle definitely needs returning, ours was very old , dated and stained, the cold water tap in tge sink was hot and took ages to get cold The beds are to die for ,so comfortable , with this heat The room was supplied with fans which was a godsend. The food we had for our evening mealwas plentiful and tasty, the breakfast certainly shone, it was all very fresh and hot

The breakfast was good, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. However, the bed and pillows were uncomfortable and felt quite outdated, making the stay not worth the price. The hotel is also located next to a busy street, so traffic noise at night made it difficult to sleep.

Staff were very attentive at times and generally friendly. The bar/restaurant area is a really space, the rooms were a good size, however there was dirt in places like around the windows, under the bed and in the corners. It feels like it needs a good clean along with the children's toys that were downstairs and in the garden for use. A bit of a shame, as it has the potential to be a really nice family spot.

Im working in the area so brought the family along for the ride from Lee on the Solent. Lovely accommodation, exceeded expectations for sure, we have the family room, dog friendly too and its so spacious and airy... 30° outside today. Fans in all rooms too. The lovely girls squeezed us in for the carvery for 2 too and it was delicious. Couldn't eat it all.... makes a change. Really nice staff 👍 grounds are lovely and taught our son, 8 to play pool too so really fun xxx Can't wait for breakfast 😋
