Marshwood Manor Cottages - The Hayloft

Photo: Marshwood Manor

The Hayloft is a converted barn at Marshwood Manor, a ten-acre estate near Bridport with woodland, pasture and a stream running through the grounds. You get the whole property to yourself: four bedrooms (a kingsize and three doubles, one of which is twin singles), two bathrooms, and plenty of space for eight people. One dog stays free. The ground floor has a large kitchen with an electric range, dishwasher and stable doors opening to a courtyard, plus a sitting room with a woodburner and Freeview TV. Upstairs bedrooms are arranged around the landing, with two bathrooms serving them both.

The kitchen is properly equipped for cooking proper meals rather than heating takeaways. Bed linen and towels come with the booking, along with wifi and parking on site. There's a utility room with a washer-dryer if you need it. Outside, you have a garden with seating and a BBQ, and access to the manor's shared games room (table tennis). The setting is rural and quiet—the drive is private and set back from the road—but the unspoilt beaches and sandstone cliffs of the Dorset coast are only five miles away. Lyme Regis and other beaches are within ten miles. No smoking inside the property.

We are extremely disappointed with our experience at this wedding venue from start to finish. After putting down a £5,000 deposit, we met with the owner and were not even congratulated on our engagement. There was no warmth, no welcome, and not even a small celebratory gesture after committing a significant amount of money. It immediately felt like poor customer service, and unfortunately, that feeling continued throughout. Five months before our wedding, I was diagnosed with stage 4 incurable cancer. After having paid £10,000 in total, we were told we would only receive £2,500 back and that we should claim the rest through our wedding insurance — adding even more stress during an already devastating and life-changing time. What upset us most was the complete lack of empathy. The owner stated that if she refunded money every time someone had a terminal illness, a motorbike accident, or an unwell child, she “would have no business.” We found this response deeply upsetting and lacking any compassion. In the end, we are relieved we chose not to go ahead with our wedding here. The money we lost would have greatly helped us financially during this incredibly difficult period, and my partner has had to return to work instead of being by my side while I undergo treatment. We would not recommend this venue based on our experience.

AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL!!!!!! Refusing to return £7,500 to a couple who had to cancel their wedding because one partner has been diagnosed with terminal stage 4 incurable cancer is beyond DISGUSTING!!!! This is not just bad customer service—this is a complete lack of humanity. No policy justifies exploiting people during one of the worst moments of their lives. This business should be ashamed of itself, and I urge anyone with a conscience to think very carefully before booking.

Absolutely gorgeous wedding venue. The cottages make for a lovely place for family/wedding party to stay and get ready on the day. My only comment is the cottage kitchens could do with a bit more kitchen utensils/plates/basic necessities etc, we didn't have enough knives and forks on the Hayloft for the people staying there

This is the second time we have stayed here and we love the location and the accommodation. It lacked a few kitchen essentials as we do like to cook and eat in but the rest of the cottage is very comfortable with a lovely wildflower meadow just outside. Owners very helpful, friendly and love dogs. The footpaths from Marshwood Manor are a bit overgrown but there are beautiful walks all around the area. We will definitely go again.
