Arbigland Farm - Curlew Lodge
Dumfries and Galloway
View on Google MapsPhoto: Arbigland Estate
Curlew Lodge is a timber-built lodge on the Arbigland Estate near Dumfries, positioned to give it seclusion among fruit trees while remaining part of a small cluster of holiday properties. The name comes from the curlews that call across the foreshore and fields in front, especially between autumn and early spring. The lodge sits at ground level throughout, with an open-plan living space that centres on a wood burner, a kitchen fitted for cooking from scratch, and direct access to a decked area and fenced grounds.
Two bedrooms sleep four: the first has a zip-and-link king bed that converts to singles on request, the second has two single beds. There is one bathroom with a cubicle shower and grab rails. Essentials including electricity, heating, bed linen, towels and wifi are covered, along with initial fuel for the burner. You'll have parking for two cars on site. The grounds, which you share with neighbouring lodges, include a patio and barbecue. One dog is welcome. The estate's coastal position and the mix of rural surroundings and accessible facilities make this suitable for families, couples and those wanting a quieter base for exploring the area.

Where do I begin? To say that shore cottage did not match our expectations would be a gross understatement!!! The place smelled awful and we were grateful to our son who arrived before us and asked us to buy air fresheners from Dumfries before we arrived. The place is run down and unkempt, windows cracked and rotting, pictures taken. Dead insect in kitchen cupboard. Old chipped crockery, dirty drapes. Old microwave with paint flaking off. Access to beach via a steep dangerous unmaintained path. We’ve rented numerous cottages throughout Scotland, this was the worst we have encountered by some considerable distance. We stayed one night and then left.

Spent a week at Shore Cottage on the Arbigland Estate in April 2018 . Comfortable accommodation in a wonderful spot and sensational views. Definitely recommended.

Fantastic getaway in a perfect location to see what Dumfries and Galloway has to offer. We stayed in the Lapwing Lodge. The lodge was cosy, light and big. The heating worked a treat but having the log burner on in the evenings was a true luxury. It had everything we needed and looked onto the beautiful hills in the distance. The lodge itself is right next to the beach and we spent hours looking for the fossils and playing with my 9yr old and dog. There are lots of walks around the estate and a 2 minute walk around the beach is a fantastic pub serving great food all day. The owner, Jamie, was incredibly helpful so our stay went without hitch. We were sad to leave and we will be back again!
