Arbigland Farm - Powillimount Cottage

Dumfries and Galloway

Photo: Arbigland Estate

A five-minute walk brings you to the beach from Powillimount Cottage, making this an excellent base for exploring the Dumfries and Galloway coastline. The property sits on working farmland with views across open countryside, and the nearby Beachcomber Escapes attraction is within easy reach for a day out. The cottage itself is spacious enough for six guests across three bedrooms and two bathrooms, arranged over two floors with a practical layout designed for families or groups wanting time together.

Downstairs, an open-plan living and dining area centres on a woodburner—useful for cooler evenings—with a separate kitchen equipped to prepare proper meals. One bedroom on this floor has an ensuite shower room. Upstairs, two further bedrooms sleep two and one person respectively. A full family bathroom sits adjacent. The essentials are covered: electricity, bed linen, towels and wi-fi are all included. Heating comes from oil central heating. Private parking is provided for two cars, and one dog is welcome on the farm, though it must be kept on a lead. Note that the internal stairs are steep. The property is no smoking throughout.

Where do I begin? To say that shore cottage did not match our expectations would be a gross understatement!!! The place smelled awful and we were grateful to our son who arrived before us and asked us to buy air fresheners from Dumfries before we arrived. The place is run down and unkempt, windows cracked and rotting, pictures taken. Dead insect in kitchen cupboard. Old chipped crockery, dirty drapes. Old microwave with paint flaking off. Access to beach via a steep dangerous unmaintained path. We’ve rented numerous cottages throughout Scotland, this was the worst we have encountered by some considerable distance. We stayed one night and then left.

Spent a week at Shore Cottage on the Arbigland Estate in April 2018 . Comfortable accommodation in a wonderful spot and sensational views. Definitely recommended.

Fantastic getaway in a perfect location to see what Dumfries and Galloway has to offer. We stayed in the Lapwing Lodge. The lodge was cosy, light and big. The heating worked a treat but having the log burner on in the evenings was a true luxury. It had everything we needed and looked onto the beautiful hills in the distance. The lodge itself is right next to the beach and we spent hours looking for the fossils and playing with my 9yr old and dog. There are lots of walks around the estate and a 2 minute walk around the beach is a fantastic pub serving great food all day. The owner, Jamie, was incredibly helpful so our stay went without hitch. We were sad to leave and we will be back again!
