Castle Douglas sits at the gateway to Dumfries and Galloway's outdoor attractions—mountain biking trails, coastal walks, forest paths, and a scatter of gardens and historic sites. Kirkennan Lodge is a detached house on the Kirkennan Estate, where 35 acres of grounds run down to the River Urr. The setting is genuinely quiet, though the landscape comes with an unfenced pond and stream, so children need supervising and the terrain has slopes and steps.
The lodge sleeps seven across four bedrooms: one with a kingsize bed, two with single beds each, and one single with a pull-out. There is one bathroom with a bath and shower. Downstairs, a living room with woodburner and a separate dining room open onto a kitchen equipped to cook proper meals—oven, dishwasher, fridge, freezer and microwave are all here. Bed linen, towels and wifi are provided, along with heating. One dog stays free, and there is parking for three cars on site, plus an electric vehicle charging point.
The garden is enclosed and lawned, with patio seating. A welcome pack arrives with you. The property suits families or groups wanting a base for exploring the region, particularly if anyone in the party bikes—the Dalbeattie 7Stanes trail is nearby. No smoking indoors.

The Kirkennan Estate is stunning. We stayed in the lodge and loved being in a beautiful setting and being able to wander around the estate straight from our doorstep. It's a bit like staying in a National Trust place but more rustic, and you have it pretty much to yourself. The kids had a lot of fun in the garden, the estate, and playing in the lodge itself. There's loads of fun things to do nearby ( beaches, walks, woods, for kids cocoabean factory for a rainy day, the dalbeatie woods, ernespie farm also lots of walking, castles, beaches, quaint towns etc.). The owners were friendly and helpful! Cons It is very close to a busy road with lorries etc going along so you get quite a bit of road noise, and you don't feel totally remote. The house was great, good shower, most things you could need, standard self catering equipment, but a bit musty and damp in places with a bit of a dog smell. We don't have a dog but it is popular with dog owners.

Visited this year. Lodge was lovely in a beautiful woodland estate. Very peaceful. Walks around estatewere fantastic. Owners were friendly and helpful. Love to visit again.
