About Balmore Guest House
Edinburgh's Gilmore Place area, within easy reach of Haymarket and Edinburgh Zoo, is home to Balmore Guest House, a straightforward bed and breakfast for those wanting a base close to the city's main attractions without the fuss of a larger hotel.
Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, family options for those travelling with children, and in-room drinks, while free WiFi and 24 hour reception cover the practical basics. Beds are comfortable and rooms kept clean, though some are on the smaller side, so this suits guests who don't need much space. A garden gives a bit of outdoor room to sit, and luggage storage is useful for early arrivals or late departures. Breakfast is included to start the day.
The surrounding area has plenty to fill an itinerary, with pubs, bars, restaurants and entertainment nearby, along with fishing and watersports options for something different. Edinburgh Zoo and Haymarket are both within easy distance, making this a workable spot for sightseeing on foot or by public transport. Service has been described as inconsistent at times, so it's worth setting expectations accordingly.
What guests say
When we arrived , we were kindly greeted by the receptionist. He gave us our rookie. And when we went up to the room , we found three nicely made beds, the mattresses were really nice and the bathroom was spotless. The water pressure in the shower was really good in comparison to some other establishments in Edinburgh. We had a nice cup of tea and went into the city center , which is only a fifteen minute walk. We got some nice recommendations from the staff regarding the facilities in the neighborhood. We didn't have any complaints about the noise, had a great night sleep.

Went on a solo trip to Scotland and stayed three night here at the Balmore guest house. Was emailed a couple days previously that there would be a late check-in charge that ascended the later I checked in. Absurd. I’ve never heard of a late check-in fee. Parking was limited to five or six spots and was on a first come first served basis. Otherwise, you were relegated to street meters or car parks which became expensive after a while. My room was not nearly as clean or tidy as the one advertised, my bed was springy, and the room was extremely cramped, although I think that might be par for the course on value hotels in Edinburgh. A day before check out, I was notified via email that I had a two hour window to check out or I would have to email the hotel what time I was checking out. The inn operated on its own convenience, not the guests. On a positive note, the inn was walking distance from just about everything you could ask for and came at a price much more reasonable compared to other inns I shopped around for. If I were to plan the trip again, I would of paid a little extra for a more accommodating inn even if I didn’t spend much time in my room.

Its a walk into town, of 25/30 mins, there's 2 houses , we were over the road , room only so u have find breakfast, parking is not great ,its kitted out to victorian times, rooms dark, en suite shower ,kettle n tea in small cups, but quiet , we had to park out of town n catch a bus into York, but the city is amazing. Not sure if we would stay here again, as its alot of stairs, u need to say if u need ground floor, dont think we would stay again sorry.

Our stay at The Balmoral was extremely disappointing and fell well below the standard expected of a five-star hotel. To begin with, we were charged an additional £50 for checking in late, despite our flight being delayed – something completely outside of our control. Charging guests for circumstances beyond their control is unreasonable and set a poor tone for the stay. The room itself was far smaller than expected and felt stuffy and uncomfortable . The Wi-Fi was virtually unusable, with such a weak signal that we couldn’t connect properly or stream any services. Housekeeping was equally disappointing. After servicing the room, the beds were only half made, dirty coffee cups were left behind, and we weren’t provided with enough towels. The bathroom presented even more problems. The shower drain was blocked, and although we reported it and were told it had been fixed, it clearly hadn’t been. The next time we used it, the entire bathroom flooded. On top of that, the shower pressure was poor and also required maintenance. For a hotel with The Balmoral’s reputation and price point, these repeated service and maintenance failures are simply unacceptable. Between the unnecessary late check-in charge, poor housekeeping, unreliable Wi-Fi and unresolved maintenance issues, our experience was nowhere near what we expected from one of Edinburgh’s flagship luxury hotels. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend staying here based on our experience.
