Gateshead sits at the heart of the North East, with Newcastle's galleries and music venues minutes away and Beamish Museum's recreation of Victorian life just down the road. Lapwing Cottage occupies a converted farm building on rolling land, reached by a quiet country lane, offering a genuine rural base that still keeps major attractions within easy reach.
The cottage is yours alone, arranged entirely on one floor. A combined living space includes a sofa, TV and DVD player; the kitchen is fitted with an electric oven, hob, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. The bedroom holds a zip-and-link super king bed, convertible to two singles on request, and the bathroom has both a bath and shower cubicle. Bed linen, towels and wifi are provided; heating and electricity are included in the price. A private garden with patio and barbecue furniture comes with the cottage, and you have parking for two cars on site.
This works well for couples seeking countryside quiet without sacrificing access to city culture and museums. Durham's cathedral is 10 miles away, the Dales and Hadrian's Wall are within an hour's drive, and there's a shop and food pub 2 miles down the lane. No smoking inside the property.

We were in touch with Louise back in December to secure this stay for when we relocated from Australia to the UK and she was so helpful throughout this process. We stayed for 3 weeks and it was everything and more we imagined. You feel a million miles away, the location is fantastic and we have already booked to stay again in December! 100% recommend this beautiful cottage.

Would prefer to choose 4.5/ 5 stars. We enjoyed our 2 weeks at Riding Lane Farm. We explored various points of Hadrian’s Wall, walked the countryside around the accommodation as well as checked out the coast and fab beaches from Bamburgh down to Sunderland...not to mention the daily visit to feed the chickens, which my boys (and we) enjoyed. Overall we really enjoyed our stay. It is a working arable farm which Louise and Angus manage as well as the 5 or so rental accommodations onsite and more offsite. Louise was very welcoming, helpful and friendly throughout. As a family of four we had two interconnecting 1 bed cottages each with en-suite (Lapwing and Beamish cottages) Pros - Value for money was excellent - Super comfy bed and pillows - Suitably furnished with comfy sofa - Well equipped kitchen (I always take my knife sharper) - Good quality white goods - Friendly farm dog who will visit occasionally - Louise let us keep veg scraps to feed the chickens. You can even buy their eggs for a full farm country breakfast! Cons - We’d prefer more privacy: shame the large windows didn’t face the countryside instead of the car park and other the accommodations. This could be easily remedied by adding net curtains, shutters or similar (eg trellis planting) to obstruct the car park view - Lack of outdoor furniture to dine outside
