About Merchant City Inn

Glasgow's Merchant City is known for its converted warehouses, cobbled lanes and mix of bars and restaurants, and Merchant City Inn sits right within it on Virginia Street. Argyle Street is a short walk away, and the Scottish Event Campus is close enough to make this a practical base for anyone attending a show or conference there.

The hotel has 40 rooms, including family rooms with en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning, and drinks available in room. Facilities extend well beyond the basics for a property this size, with a restaurant and bar on site, an indoor swimming pool, gym and spa or sauna, plus meeting rooms and business services for those travelling on work. A garden, lift access, porter services and luggage storage add to the practical side, and there's an electric vehicle charge point for drivers. Free Wi-Fi runs throughout, and breakfast is included, with a hearty Scottish spread that guests have singled out as a highlight even where the rooms themselves are described as fairly modest.

Beyond the hotel, the surrounding streets offer plenty of pubs, restaurants and entertainment within easy reach, making it simple to spend an evening out without needing transport. For straightforward, well-located lodging in the centre of Glasgow, it covers the essentials and adds a few extras besides.

This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. There is no hot water for showers, and the heaters do not work at all. The manager and the Indian staff are extremely disrespectful. It seems they have forgotten that they are in Scotland, where respect and good customer service are very important. I am surprised that they work in a hotel without having proper experience in hotel management. The hotel is not clean; housekeeping only comes once a week to clean the room. Treating guests like this is unacceptable if you want to run a good hotel

On August 8, 2025, at 3:50 PM, my family and I were at Merchant City Inn. The hotel manager kept us waiting at the reception for about two hours. During this time, he told us to leave and come back in one hour, even though we remained in the nearby area. When we returned after an hour, he again spoke to us loudly and disrespectfully. My 7-year-old child was very frightened by the situation and even ended up sleeping on the sofas out of fear. The manager’s behavior showed complete disregard for the comfort and well-being of my family. The entire incident was recorded by the hotel’s CCTV cameras, and I also have a personal video of it. I sincerely hope the hotel management takes this matter seriously and takes appropriate measures to prevent such behavior in the future.

Very uncomfortable beds/pillows. Drab, serviceable rooms (good water pressure in shower). Loud after bar-hours. Unless you are in Glasgow to hit the bar scene and don’t care for comfort, not worth the price when more comfortable places are about the same price. Polite, but not friendly staff. Good location for proximity to attractions but it doesn’t feel clean or particularly safe.

This place is charming, clean and stylish with real wood floors and sophisticated lighting. The location is superb, just off Argyle St and round the corner from GOMA. There is no food available but no noisy bar either. The receptionist was efficient and friendly, taking it for granted that guests would come early and leave luggage in the huge room where he could keep an eye on it. One of the things that appealed to me was that I had to ask if I wanted my room cleaned. In 2022 we really shouldn't be doing unnecessary cleaning of rooms and washing of towels. Be aware there are lots of stairs, on a curve, and no lift, but it's really worth carrying your case to enjoy the atmosphere. I loved it.
