A fabulous visit as part of the National Lottery Open Day at the beginning of March. Easy to find whilst driving through beautiful Cumbrian and Northumberland landscapes. Housesteads is also accessible on foot via Hadrian's Wall, bicycle, and bus. There's an ample car park that you pay for when leaving (ANPR), which includes the bus stop, with toilet facilities and a café. Walk past the toilets towards the back of the cafe and start to follow the public footpaths (track with pedestrian gate) up hill towards the wooded copse, through the fields (with livestock) and up to the visitor centre. You purchase your tickets at the visitor centre/museum. You can get drinks and snacks here, there are picnic benches and a portaloo. Then off to explore the expansive Roman Fort of Housesteads and Hadrian's Wall itself. There's a trail for young people to enjoy, too. If you love a bit of history and want to see what remains of life in another time, this is definitely for you. Armed with all the information available let your imagination run wild, fascinating. Still getting my head around the fact we don't have underfloor heating as standard yet... I managed a bright sunny day, but the wind was bitter, the ground frozen, and it's a very exposed area of countryside. So be weather prepared.

Wow, what an amazing place. Layout of fort with signs saying what each part was. Great views around and of the wall. Lovely museum. Parking close by and bit of a climb to fort but well worth it.

Very cool site with fantastic views and ruins to explore. There is a bit of a walk from the carpark to the site itself with an incline and some rough path underfoot but it's well worth a visit. There's a small museum at the top and a little film (narrated by the absolute legend Bernard Hill!!) which is worth a look. Staff were lovely too, although we visited June 2026 and the carpark cafe and toilets are sadly closed temporarily. Parking is paid but there's is plenty spaces and also campervan parking. Also worth noting that we weren't English heritage members but as national trust members we had free entry! Overall a very interested site with some great info and landscape - highly recommended!

Large remains of Roman fort. If the guided tour is on take it, it's free and the knowledge these guys impart is immense. A dig was in progress, 3rd of 5yrs. Great to see them at work and happy to discuss the process. After we visited the museum. Thousands of artifacts on display. Many leather and wood which have survived being buried for more than 1500 years. All in all a great day out.
