Birkshaw Barn
Northumberland
Northumberland's landscape around Hadrian's Wall draws walkers and history enthusiasts year-round. Vindolanda Roman Fort lies within a 20-minute walk, and The Sill Landscape Discovery Centre is nearby, making this corner of the county ideal for exploring both the National Park and the wall itself. Birkshaw Barn sits on the edge of this terrain, a thoughtfully converted property that retains character while delivering modern comfort.
The barn accommodates four guests across two double bedrooms, each with an ensuite or separate shower room. Downstairs, the ground-floor bedroom suits anyone with mobility concerns. The open-plan living space combines a shaker-style kitchen—equipped for proper cooking—with a sitting area positioned to catch views across the valley. Large bi-fold doors open onto a patio; a wood-burning stove provides warmth on cooler days. Electricity, wi-fi, bed linen, towels and logs are included; there is parking for two cars on site, and an electric vehicle charging point available at cost.
The conversion uses locally sourced materials and timber from the owner's woodlands, giving the building a sense of place rather than corporate finish. It works equally well for couples, friends sharing, or a small family—though note that smoking is not permitted inside.
