Fern Cottage

Northumberland

View on Google Maps

Push open the door to Fern Cottage and you step straight into a single-storey space where everything you need sits on one level. The open-plan living area has a 24-inch smart TV and a multi-fuel burner for cooler evenings. The kitchen adjoins it—electric oven and hob, microwave, fridge-freezer and washing machine mean you can cook properly or keep things simple. One double bedroom and a shower room complete the layout. Electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are all covered, and initial logs for the burner are provided.

Fern Cottage sleeps two and welcomes one small dog. There is private parking for a single car on site and a bike store if you arrive by other means. A bench at the front looks out onto the surroundings. A pub sits within a mile's walk. The cottage stands in walking distance of Barcombe Fell, a heather-covered hill with views north to Hadrian's Wall and south towards the Pennines. Bardon Mill is nearby on the Newcastle-Carlisle railway line, with trains running twice hourly and a bus service (no. 685) connecting to larger towns. Haydon Bridge, four miles east, has more facilities; Haltwhistle, further on, offers shops, restaurants and a swimming pool. The area is rich in Roman history—Barcombe Quarry is where the Thorngrafton Horde, a hoard of Roman coins, was found in the 1800s and is now in a museum. No smoking inside.

Lovely flat on the side of the Loch, great access to Fort William and the surrounding areas in Glencoe.

Small cottage but big enough for two people. Cosy and the owner left a few things to start us off... Tea, coffee. Shortbread and a small milk in the fridge. Nice walks from the door and a few villages nearby. Nice if you want some peace to get away from it all.

Pleasant little cottage in a peaceful little village hidden off the A69. Just right for a relaxing break from the hustle of everyday life. Plenty of walks, easy or more strenuous if you wish. The walk/climb up Barcombe Fell was worthwhile for the bird's-eye view of Vindolanda and the surrounding countryside. Gives a better perspective of the area than any map can.
