About Gypsy Castle Camping
This unassuming pop-up site on the edge of Hay-on-Wye punches well above its weight for location. You're within easy strolling distance of the Wye's grassy commons and the town's legendary bookshops, pubs and independent cafes, all while camped inside the Brecon Beacons National Park. It's ideal for readers, river-lovers and anyone craving a self-sufficient escape with genuine character.
Facilities are deliberately basic: two horsebox showers, portable loos, cold-water sinks and a chemical disposal point. If you need hairdryers and heated floors, look elsewhere. What you get instead is affordable simplicity and a manager who checks in regularly to keep things ticking over.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome year-round (livestock nearby, so leads essential). With canoeing, cycling and fishing all close at hand, and Hay's brilliant streets a short walk away, Gypsy Castle rewards those happy to trade polish for position.

What visitors say
We booked this campsite for 2 nights and it was a great stay for our van. The place was easy to find (following maps that is) and there was lots of room for our stay. Colin welcomed us in the morning and the amenities were clean and tidy. Strong communication from the moment we booked. The site is a great location for visiting Hay-on-Wye with an easy walk down. The co-op is about 25 minutes walk, so depending on your plans, visit there first. There is a river at the bottom of the site you are allowed to access, but you need to use the ladder that is placed there, so our dog explored the local river when walking to and from Hay-on-Wye. Would come back here again if we return to Hay-on-Wye.

Really lovely quiet campsite (only myself and one other van during school holidays!?). Stayed here for 1 night with my small tent whilst hiking Offa's Dyke. Very close to facilities in Hay (15 minutes walk to nearest Spar which was open till 10pm). Good basic fascilities. Warm shower, clean loo, sinks. Really good value. The only reason I've marked it down is it just had a vibe of being a bit more loved once? Sign was hanging off when I walked in, two plastic chairs scattered next to a portaloo.... a nice little sign on arrival, or signposting river access would have felt a bit more welcoming! Would still recommend though 👌

Gypsy castle camping is an absolute hidden gem of a site for bookish campers. Beautifully set with views of rolling hills and farmland, a short and picturesque stroll into the tiktok famous book town of hay-on-wye. Simple back to basics amenities, spotlessly cleaned by the owner. Toilets and 2 showers with hot water and a washing up area. You have the choice of a wilder pitch away from human connection or a pitch alongside the fence where others will join you. Extremely well priced, well below local competitors it makes for a budget friendly stay (more money to spend on books!) The owner is absolutely lovely and told us the way to walk to town with great communication on where to pitch. He was accommodating with our arrival time and couldn't do more to make it a pleasant stay. 10/10. Katherine
