26 handpicked places to stay

Where to base yourself in Hay-on-Wye depends mostly on how much you want to walk and how much you want to drive. Staying in the town centre, around Broad Street or Castle Street, means every bookshop, pub and the castle are a few minutes on foot, which suits short breaks built around browsing and the Hay Festival in May, when the town gets busy and having a car becomes more of a hindrance than a help. These central addresses tend to be historic buildings, pubs with rooms or converted townhouses, with character taking priority over space.

A short walk or drive out, in Cusop or along the riverside fringe of town, properties trade a little convenience for quieter surroundings, gardens and views over the Wye towards the hills, while still keeping the centre within easy reach. Further out, in villages such as Clyro to the west, larger country house hotels offer more space, grounds and parking, and suit visitors who plan to explore the wider Black Mountains and Wye Valley by car rather than spend the whole stay on foot in town. Whichever area you choose, book well ahead for the festival fortnight in late May, when demand across the whole town spikes sharply and the best-placed rooms go first.

Across the price range, most of Hay's accommodation is independently run rather than part of any chain, and many owners are happy to advise on walking routes, bookshop recommendations or festival logistics. Rooms tend to be smaller and more traditional in the oldest buildings, with modern comforts fitted carefully into listed structures, while newer or larger properties on the edge of town offer more conventional hotel-standard space. Breakfast is usually a strong point wherever you stay, drawing on the same local produce that shows up on the town's pub menus.
