What visitors say
Fun morning out. Entrance to the museum was much cheaper than I expected, about £11 each with no concessions. We spent about 2 hours here. The lift to the tower was out of use but I'd recommend walking up anyway as there are paintings and information all the way up. There are also parts talking about ships and the shipyards if you're interested in that. The ruins of the wall and the Roman buildings are interesting and it's a nice experience being right at the end of the world famous wall.

We came with low expectations and left really happy. Would strongly recommend visiting Segedunum BEFORE South Shields Arbeia site which has reconstructed buildings. This is also the Start or End point of the 84mile traIl the length of the wall! Segedunum has a fantastic FREE audio guide Geo Tourist that you can read and listen to as you walk around the ruins/foundations. The section of the wall across the road was interesting and impressive too. All of this outdoor extravaganza... is Free. The entry to the Museum and Tower are not cheap but if trying to get full immersion in the site, it's worth biting the bullet. The model of the site, plus dual toilets, bath house and other excavation findings are well recorded and displayed. We also had fun finding the Roman Gods (not bugs) around the place and I was excited to get my sticker prize at the end. The wonderfully friendly purple staff even had a cheat sheet of where the Gods are hidden around the site. (Note, these are *** more for kids)

The best thing to see here is the ruins of the baths, available free to the public, about 100 meters away. From the car park, follow the tarmac path north and toward the river. The museum is mostly for kids, the exhibits are all basic, with activities and questions for the kiddos. My ears are still ringing from my visit 2 hours ago. Hey parents, yelling at your kids doesn't stop the kids from yelling. The parental voices are louder, and just increases the noise. Try using your inside voice to calm the children. The tower seems to have been built specifically to view the ruins, so please keep the windows clean enough to see through. The ruins are a disappointment. I guess building recreations was a good idea 50 years ago, but at least label them as such. Piling new rocks and pavers on top of actual ruins does a disservice to history and is insulting to your visitors. The baths and garden recreation, in an unrelated location, might be interesting. If they were open.

Segedunum was a large Roman fort, and the remains have been excavated and are now open to the public. The museum has a 35 m high observation tower that provides excellent views out over the remains of this fort. The museum is also very informative, and the exhibitions are well presented. I wish there was more, actually, but that is a minor quibble.

Visitors say this museum offers informative Roman exhibits, interactive displays for children, and a viewing tower with excellent views of the fort remains. They also highlight the reasonable ticket prices, convenient free parking, and friendly, helpful staff.
Some reviews mention the site can be poorly maintained.
