About Herdwick Croft
You don't have to be Wordsworth to know that most Lake District views are rather special, but it's not often you get to camp a mere 50 yards from one of its most scenic lakes. Small and secluded Herdwick Croft sits on the edge of beautiful Bassenthwaite Lake, eight miles from Keswick, with views sweeping over the fells of Skiddaw and Binsey, Whinlatter Forest, and glorious westward sunsets. Pack a book and bumble over the bridge to sink at the lake's edge, or get more active with windsurfing, canoeing and sailing (hire or launch a dinghy from Bassenthwaite Sailing Club a mile away). Anglers can cast for pike, roach, perch and eels from lakeside or boat, or try the river running through the site itself.
The park is surrounded by woodland teeming with local wildlife – look out for ospreys and herons nesting nearby. Walks of all levels start from here, including a 20-minute stroll to award-winning pub The Pheasant. Hardstanding electric pitches come with decent facilities: launderette, showers, wifi and chemical disposal. It's cozy and peaceful, though some guests note the bistro can be closed. Well-behaved children and dogs welcome.

What visitors say
Beautiful location, well kept grounds and basic facilities. However do not recommend due to shocking customer service. We booked a grass pitch as there was no hard standing available on the website. Got there and the ground was saturated. So we pulled into a hardstanding pitch as there was no one else there parked in any of the caravan pitches. We asked a guy doing the fencing if this was ok, he went to check and came back and said it was fine as we was only staying 2 nights and no one else had booked it. 2nd night, we get a knock at the door at 9.30pm - to the same guying collecting his money, we asked what for as it was fully paid for and he replied because we had parked on hard standing it would be £20. It all seemed sketchy but we paid the money, luckily we had cash to do so. I have tried repeatedly to call and have emailed, just to address the situation as it didn’t seem right and we feel like we was coned by a random worker for £20. Anyway, no answer, no reply, no clarity on if it was legit or not. So no, I don’t recommend, unless you want to be disturbed in bed by local smack head groundskeeper for 20 quid …

Great location, quiet with fabulous views over Skiddaw. Close to the lake and wildlife park. Unfortunately that's where the good stuff ends. Check in was stressful. Was supposed to receive a text message with instructions but it never arrived (turned out it was sent to the wrong number). When we arrived at about 4pm on a Friday the Bistro was shut and no other staff around to help. Tried ringing the given mobile number a few times but no answer. Eventually managed to find the site owner after knocking on every house door at the edge of the site. He grumpily resent the text message... Caravans poorly cleaned and maintained. Ours had months worth of cobwebs, broken shower screen, broken hot tub cover support and the stinkiest kitchen sink plughole ever. Wifi connection so slow as to be unusable. Ended up watching the TV by hotspotting my mobile. The Bistro is a joke. There are no advertised opening times, despite the claims on the website. For the week we were there it was not open at all which is poor for the end of June. Every day we saw hopeful holidaymakers standing outside the closed Bistro with sad and confused expressions. This is our 3rd visit to this site and it is getting worse each stay. Will look to book somewhere else next time.

I was a little bit worried before coming along for my staff here within caravan Crummock. Reading reviews of other people I was worried to come along as a single parent with 1 child for a jacuzzi stay. Before arriving I received a text with all information about when I arrive and what to do. If something doesn’t work the text tells you what to do. Then you can result in calling the number that’s attached. Thankfully I followed instruction and never had any issues. Arrived 45 minutes early and my van was ready. Walked in and it was homely and ver clean. All kitchen supplies you would need are there. Jacuzzi has been maintained each morning as it states in the book/text you have. They do water checks. I do have the fear of jacuzzi as I have had bad experience on them previously. The day of arriving we didn’t use it as it was still heating up as you would expect as they empty between each booking. I expected this so you do loose your first night of using it but I would rather that knowing it’s been changed. The next morning it was hot! Was a little disappointed the bistro is shut so please check this if you wish to stay on site more to eat out rather than take a drive. All in my experience staying within the crummock van has been very relaxing and enjoyable.

After looking forward to staying here since booking it 12 months earlier was a real disappointment. Prior to our arrival, we contacted the contact number we had been given several times to check if they had a travel cot and mattress for our little boy, they never confirmed however they did confirm an early check in luckily we brought our own travel cot and mattress as when we arrived they had left a travel cot but it was full of cobwebs and no mattress. Upon our arrival the bar/bistro wasn't open to check in. They did send us a message to say if it was closed then to ring a number. After trying numerous times with no answer we was lucky enough to find a member of staff working on a lodge. We pulled over and asked him how to we check in? He then directed us to the lodge and just said in was unlocked for us and the keys were on the table. When we arrived the lodge was absolutely freezing! Yet again no answer on the number we got given. After a good while he told us what to do with the boiler. Not very good customer service when they should of sent someone out. We shouldn't be touching a boiler! We stayed here for a week and half the week the Internet kept cutting out and when we messaged them, they kept on telling us to switch everything off and keep trying. Unfortunately it doesn't stop here, we then had issues with the hot tub, the heating stopped working and the jets. Again messaged them and no reply. I'd be happy to say we won't be staying here again, which is very sad as we book lodges all over the lake district the same time every year and have never experienced such poor customer service. Would not recommend.
