About Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa

Bassenthwaite Lake spreads out before Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa, with the Cumbrian fells rising beyond and well-kept gardens running down towards the water. It's a setting that shapes the whole stay, whether you're watching the light change over the lake from a window or walking the grounds after breakfast.

The 46 rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning and drinks provided, and the hotel has a lift for easier access to upper floors. Beyond the bedrooms there's a restaurant and bar, a gym, and a spa with sauna facilities including an outdoor hydro-pool, plus both indoor and outdoor swimming pools. The kitchen has a good reputation for its Indian dishes and its steaks, and there's a snack bar for something lighter. Meeting rooms and a wedding venue add to the practical side, while childcare, concierge and laundry services take care of the details, and pets are welcome too.

Outside, the location opens onto walking and cycling country, with golf, fishing, horse riding and watersports all within reach, along with nearby pubs and restaurants for evenings out. Free on-site parking is provided, and staff throughout the hotel are consistently noted for their attentiveness and professionalism.

We stayed for two nights from 10th to 12th June and left with a very mixed impression. The food was genuinely excellent and the highlight of our visit. We dined at the grill restaurant on the first night and the Indian on the second — both were fantastic and far exceeded expectations. Breakfast was also very good; although the variety wasn’t the widest, everything we ordered arrived fresh, hot, and delicious. Unfortunately, the hotel itself fell well short of what you’d expect from one of the UK’s supposedly outstanding hotels. We originally booked a Club Double at over £300 per night mid-week in June and were upgraded to a Deluxe Lake View Double (which would normally be significantly more expensive — over £400 a night). Despite the “upgrade”, the room was old, tired, and in need of urgent refurbishment. We noticed cracked tiles on the bathroom floor, there were no digital TVs, and there was no air conditioning — which made it uncomfortable on warmer evenings. For that price point, this was very poor value for money and honestly quite shocking. The staff were friendly and helpful, but the lack of a concierge to assist with luggage was disappointing. The hotel does sit in a lovely quiet and tranquil location, ideal for anyone seeking peace and relaxation. Overall, we would happily return just for the dining experience, but we would not book the accommodation again at these rates. It’s a real shame — with the food this good, the hotel needs to raise its game to match its reputation.

We stayed at the beautiful hotel for 2 nights last week in a garden suit. We were nervous as we took our puppy Molly but we were delighted with the suit and the gifts for Molly was a lovely touch. The hotel and the grounds are stunning and the staff are all very friendly. Breakfast was delicious. We had 2 meals the first night was in the grill and the food was delicious the second night we had a lovely beef wellington in the restaurant. We will definitely return to this hotel and would recommend to our family and friends. The staff work so hard and are all friendly and helpful. Thankyou for making our stay a very happy one. As always, Armathwaite Hall Spa did not disappoint. From the warm, friendly staff to the superb food, everything was exceptional. The spa facilities were amazing, our room had a beautiful view, and to top it all off, the sun was shining throughout our stay. A truly relaxing and memorable spa break – we can’t wait to return! We got married at this beautiful venue on 02/07/2026, and all I can say is that we were absolutely blown away! The venue itself is stunning, and the staff couldn’t do enough for us. They truly made our day so special and ensured everything was perfect from start to finish. A special mention has to go to Lynsey, the venue’s wedding organiser. She went above and beyond to make sure our day ran smoothly, and every little detail I asked for was taken care of. Nothing was too much trouble, and her support throughout was incredible. It was genuinely the best experience of our lives, and we couldn’t have wished for a more perfect wedding day. If you’re considering this venue for your wedding, don’t hesitate—book it! You won’t be disappointed. Thank you to everyone who made our dream day come true.
