About Powter Howe

Powter Howe suits travellers after a small, unfussy base for exploring the Lake District rather than a full-service hotel experience. With just two rooms, it has the feel of a proper bed and breakfast: quiet, personal, and geared towards guests who want to spend their days outdoors and come back to somewhere simple and comfortable.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms and drinks provided, and breakfast is included to set you up for the day. Reception is staffed around the clock, and free on-site parking makes life easier if you are arriving by car with walking boots and bikes in tow. Pets are welcome, so dog owners exploring the fells need not leave anyone behind.

The setting in Thornthwaite, just outside Keswick, puts walking and cycling routes on the doorstep, with golf, fishing and watersports also within reach for those wanting more active days. Pubs, restaurants and other eateries nearby cover evening meals beyond the included breakfast. It is a straightforward, well-placed spot for anyone whose main plan is to be out in the Cumbrian countryside most of the day.

Beautiful traditional house, it's like travelling back to the past but with all the comfort. The whole house was very charming and clean. Free parking and lovely garden with flowers, birds and wild rabbits. Quiet place, surrounded with nature and walking trails on the doorstep. 8 mins from Keswick by car. The owner is lovely and very helpful, she made us excellent breakfast (everything was delicious and hot). The bedroom was spacious with ensuite. Altough I found the bed a little too soft to my liking.

Lovely, charming place that is exactly what B&Bs should be. The host was wonderful throughout and it was lovely to have a long chat with her after breakfast. The room and whole house is full of character and the whole experience was so much more than just a chain hotel. Then, the breakfast to top it off was outstanding. Quality meat products from the local butcher and fresh eggs from the chickens. Finally, the views are out of this world. Superb stay, thank you, I will return, this time on holiday.

A really welcoming stay in a well-maintained period property (1570s). I'm a solo traveller and found the double room spacious and comfortable. A great nights sleep, hot shower, and filling breakfast to kick-start the day. Nearby to Keswick, with a bus stop up the lane (Swan Hotel). Karen, our host, was really lovely to chat with and I'm grateful for her wonderful hospitality.
