Access to the castle island started again in 2026 (first time since 2019). There are still works going on to make to castle keep safe so sadly no way to see inside at the moment. There's a £4.50 per person charge to get across on the boat - you pay at the kiosk by the car park & toilets. After a dry spell you can save some cash & get across the river by stepping stones hide but you will get wet feet. I'm looking to seeing inside the castle - hopefully that will happen next year.

Threave castle is built on Threave Island in the River Dee near Castle Douglas. This island is the legendary home of the ancient kings of Galloway. There are two cars parks! One at the visitor centre and one at the rear entrance of Threave Gardens. There’s a circular farmland and woodland walk along around Threave Estate that provides views of the surrounding countryside, Threave Castle (with an option to take a detour to visit the Castle ruins). Threave Estate is managed by the National Trust for Scotland…Highly recommended a visit if you’re in the area…

There is no way across at the moment due to ongoing work which we were aware of. We did enjoy a walk through the nature reserve to view the castle from across the water though and it didn’t disappoint. Our three year old and two year old seemed to enjoy the route although our nearly one year old was a bit unsettled due to being tired.

Loved the walk round nature reserve, very well kept. Chatted to the volunteers keeping it maintained. Very good pathways, managed on mobility scooter no bother. Saw the ospreys in their nests from look out post. Didn't go across to castle as husband is disabled and wouldn't manage boat or steps at jetty. Went to cafe at Threave gardens afterwards, very nice, pricey!
