What a fine Dumfries and Galloway spot this is – with sea views over the Solway coast on one side and looking up to the Galloway Hills on the other, Barmagachan is brilliantly set for soaking up the scenery of southwest Scotland. The grass pitches here are scenic and delightfully simple in style. There's very little by way of facilities (no hot water, for instance), but you're welcome to light campfires and bring along a dog for company. Kirkcudbright is about a 10-minute drive for provisions or pub dinners, and it's a similar hop to the popular Cream o' Galloway ice cream parlour for sweet treats.

Working up an appetite should be straightforward. The 7Stanes mountain biking areas at Kirroughtree and Dalbeattie are both about half an hour away, as are the hiking trails and stargazing spots of Galloway Forest Park. Golf courses (including a smashing seafront layout at Brighouse Bay), gardens, castles and lovely beaches dot the coastline nearby – plenty to keep everyone busy between campfire evenings under big skies.
