Camping in Little Meadle
12 campsites, glamping sites and caravan parks
Little Meadle sits in gently rolling Chiltern countryside, at the foot of the chalk escarpment that runs between Princes Risborough and the Ridgeway above. It is not a recognised campsite location itself, so anyone planning to camp nearby should look to established sites in the wider Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Chilterns rather than attempting to camp around the hamlet. As in the rest of England, wild camping without the landowner's explicit permission is against the law here, and the farmland and nature reserves around Whiteleaf and Brush Hill are actively managed, so pitching a tent without permission risks both a fine and damage to sensitive chalk grassland habitats.
The terrain is characteristically Chiltern: steep, short climbs up beech-wooded scarps giving way to a flatter, more agricultural vale below, which makes for good walking country but limits flat, sheltered pitches. Established campsites in the surrounding area tend to be small, farm-based sites rather than large holiday parks, often within a short drive of Princes Risborough, and it is worth booking ahead as availability can be tight, particularly for sites with electric hook-up or family facilities.
Late spring through early autumn is the most comfortable season to camp in this part of the Chilterns, when the ground is drier underfoot and the beech woods are at their best, though the chalk soil drains reasonably well even after rain. Glamping has become increasingly popular in the wider Chilterns AONB, with bell tents, shepherd's huts, and safari tents offering a more comfortable alternative to traditional camping while still giving access to the Ridgeway and the escarpment walks. Whichever option you choose, always confirm access and camping arrangements directly with the site or landowner before you travel, since informal camping is not permitted on the surrounding farmland or nature reserves.
