The Municipal occupies the former Liverpool Municipal Buildings on Dale Street, a vast French Renaissance pile completed in 1868 as the offices of the city corporation and topped by a clock tower and spire that remain one of the centre's landmarks. The conversion, which opened under Accor's MGallery label, kept the ceremonial staircases, the tiled corridors and the council chamber, so the public rooms have a scale that modern hotels rarely attempt. It is currently the only property in Liverpool rated at five stars.
There are around 179 bedrooms and suites spread through the original building. Ceilings are high, windows are tall and many rooms retain original mouldings; the better categories look out over Dale Street or into the internal courtyard. Fittings are contemporary rather than period pastiche, with air conditioning, good beds and marble bathrooms throughout, and the layout means room shapes vary considerably from one to the next.
The spa is the main draw and is adults-only. It has a 16-metre indoor pool with views out across the rooftops, a Himalayan salt sauna, steam room, sanarium, experience showers and a jacuzzi, plus four treatment rooms including a dual suite, using Elemis and Grown Alchemist products. Access to the pool and thermal circuit is charged separately from the room rate, which is worth knowing before booking. Eating is split between the Seaforth Restaurant, the Palm Court Bar and the Botanic Tearoom, which does a well-regarded afternoon tea.
The location is as central as Liverpool gets. Lime Street station is a ten-minute walk, the Royal Court Theatre is four minutes away, Liverpool ONE is around 700 metres and the waterfront is downhill from the door. It suits couples on a spa break, business travellers who want meeting space in the centre, and anyone who would rather stay in a historic building than a modern block. Families are less well served, given the adults-only spa policy.

We stayed here 2 nights, July 2-3. Beautiful hotel, excellent location, elevators & air conditioning! There is an awkwardly long trek to your room from the elevators, but considering this was previously a municipal building, it's understandable. Comfortable beds, medium shower pressure, nice towels. Breakfast was excellent, friendly service, good food. The bar area is amazing, great use of this gorgeous space, keeping the original architecture and adding palm trees, nice vibe. Will definitely stay here again.

We chose this Hotel for a one night stay after being Married early in the day. We honestly couldn't of picked a better hotel to finish our day off. On arrival we had a lovely welcome from the staff on the desk and was informed as a gift we had been given an upgrade on our room. While waiting for our bags to arrive we sat in the Palm Court Bar which is absolutely stunning. The acoustic act where just starting there set and they were amazing and played a few dedications to us. A lovely couple at the bar sent us drinks over xx. We stayed in the bar till the act finished as they where so good. We then went up to our room to freshen up for the evening. The room did not disappoint spacious and spotless and furnished really well all in accordance with the building. Breakfast the next morning was also exceptional and the staff again where so friendly and helpful. Over all our stay was 5* and as we live in the city we will definitely be coming back even for afternoon drinks and food. We have already started recommending the hotel to others.

Hotel is stunning. From the moment you walk through the door into reception it's gorgeous. The staff were amazing, really friendly and couldn't do enough for us. From checking in Alex took our case's and walked us to the lift, the staff in the Palm Court were also super helpful. The Palm Court is beautiful to sit and relax in. The room was lovely, very high ceilings, everything was very in keeping with the age of the property. When we checked out, Alice and Canata on reception were so friendly and extremely helpful. We will definitely be returning

I had a very nice stay here. The staff were really friendly and very helpful. The room was fine, clean, comfy bed. The cleaning lady was great and knocked on to see if I wanted anything else which was great. No bath. I do enjoy a bath, however the shower was lovely and spacious. Breakfast was lovely. One thing in particular I enjoyed was being asked exactly how I liked my poached egg. Very much appreciated this as I can be quite fussy. Would definitely recommend a stay here.
