About Islington Inn
Forty-one rooms make up the Islington Inn, a hotel on Essex Road within easy reach of Angel and Islington. Rooms are kept clean and comfortable, each with a hot shower and tea and coffee facilities, though those wanting extra space should note some rooms run on the small side.
Facilities extend well beyond the bedrooms: there's a restaurant and bar on site, plus a gym, spa and sauna, and an indoor swimming pool for guests who want to unwind. Breakfast is served daily, free WiFi covers the property, and practical extras include luggage storage, a laundry service, porter and concierge support, and free on-site parking. The hotel also caters to business travellers with meeting rooms, and to couples and families with a wedding venue and childcare available. Staff are generally friendly and accommodating, although service can occasionally be inconsistent.
Outside the hotel, Essex Road puts guests within reach of pubs, restaurants and entertainment nearby, making it a workable base for exploring Angel and Islington. For the price, it delivers a solid, no-frills stay in a well-connected part of London.
What guests say
This is a well-located place on Essex Road. It was easily accessed by bus from my work location in the Homerton Hospital in London. They have a few quirky features, such as a superstore-style handicapped people’s lift: you have to keep the button pressed to summon the lift to your floor; inside, once you press the floor button, you have to keep the button pressed till you reach your desired floor. Else, the lift stops immediately. The floor corridors are like a warren of crooked passages interrupted by multiple fire doors with inadequate signage as to what lies beyond. It is a matter of trying out these to discover your room or even the staircase. In the room, mine had a toilet on a separate level, although still en suite. The steps were very narrow and access was difficult. The bathroom itself was reasonably well-appointed. The bed was quite mediocre and nothing in it was worth talking about. You can see it in the photos. Tea and coffee were available, but rather basic. The receptionist was one Mr Roman, and he was very friendly and helpful. Along Essex Road, one can find several eateries, including a gem I have separately reviewed, a Sene-Gambian place known as the Walfathou Kitchen.

Rooms are small but have everything needed (including a fan!) they’re clean and tidy with comfy beds. Bathroom is also clean with towels and toilet paper, shower is easy to work. There’s a bus stop right outside the hotel too. Would definitely stay here again.

Some places just need to be torn down and rebuilt. There's only so much refurbishing you can do, although obviously more is needed here. The toilet doesn't work, the plugs don't work, the mattress is prison-level. Every 5 minutes, someone uses the lift and the entire room fills with a buzzing sound, even at 3 a.m. The light and sound from the street are brutal. The room is so small that there's not really a place to put a large suitcase. As a human being with compassion for other human beings, I urge you to find another place for your lodging needs.
