About Opulence Central London

Breakfast at Opulence Central London comes with a choice of options to start the day, served within a Victorian townhouse setting that sets the tone for the rest of the stay. The building itself is period in character, and this carries through into the 19 guest rooms, which are furnished with antiques and decorated in a traditionally elegant style rather than a modern, minimalist one.

Rooms are compact given the townhouse structure, but guests get free WiFi throughout, along with concierge service and luggage storage for those arriving early or leaving late. There's no parking on site, so this is better suited to guests arriving by public transport or on foot. For meals beyond breakfast, a pub, restaurant and other eateries can all be found nearby rather than in-house.

The location on Gloucester Place puts Baker Street and Regent's Park within easy reach, making it a reasonable base for exploring this part of central London on foot. It's worth noting that opinions on the property vary, so travellers should weigh up the character-filled setting against a more straightforward, modern hotel stay when deciding what matters most to them.

Stayed here on a business trip after needing to find an affordable place to book at short notice. I was a little intimidated after seeing some of the reviews on here, but honestly I had no problems with my stay whatsoever. Yes, maybe some of the fixtures in the room are a little dated but the rooms were clean and well stocked. Soap and shampoo are provided and the shower worked perfectly - once I figured out how it worked. It was warm during my stay (26-28c) something I am quite sensitive to, but I managed to stay comfortable thanks to the bedside fan. The bed was comfortable and I had no issues sleeping. The gentleman manning the desk was pleasant, chatty and went out of his way to make me feel welcome. All in all, it was a nice little stay!

The hotel was conveniently located, around a 12-minute walk from Baker Street Underground and Marylebone Rail Station. Unfortunately, the overall stay was very disappointing and the room did not represent the pictures advertised, which felt extremely misleading. We stayed in a twin room where the bed sheets did not properly fit the beds. The oversized pictures on the walls made the room feel even more cramped and overwhelming. The furniture looked second-hand and far from glamorous or comfortable. The bathroom was particularly poor. The shower had to be held by hand to use it properly, the shower door did not close correctly which caused water to flood the floor, and the side of the bath was broken. There was also no bath mat provided, which is a clear health and safety concern. On our first night we even found ants in the bathroom, and overall cleanliness was not up to standard. We were only given one towel each, with no smaller towels provided, and had to repeatedly ask for extra toilet rolls and tea supplies. The noise from above was awful, especially the flushing toilet which sounded like an explosion every time. Another concern was the window in our room, which did not open properly and did not feel safe in the event of a fire. The only positive part of our stay was the staff, who were very accommodating and polite throughout. However, two nights there was more than enough for us.

In a good ish spot but absolutely grim, from the filthy stair carpets that assault your eyes as you arrive and ascend, to the balls of fluff in the room corners, to the broken bathroom fittings, half a loo roll, taps that spray water in all directions, the dusty coffee cups, the window that would only stay open if we wedged the bin in it (4th floor, no aircon, heatwave), the broken and ancient fridge, the bed that had a bit sawn off the headrest so it would fit, the awful beds with no mattress topper or pillowcase protector, one pillow each. There was no way I was getting in that bed so asked for extra towels so I could sleep on top of it, which to his credit, the chap on reception brought up for us along with some bottled water. The landing doors were propped open with a bit of 4”x 2” across the floor. This place was probably opulent in 2005 but doesn’t look like it’s been touched since. Nothing like the impression the pics give - beware!

Ideally I'd like to give 2.5 stars. The price and location are great. The room was small, as expected. The biggest issue was the cleanliness. We very nearly opted not to stay. As mentioned by other reviewers, there was no mattress or pillow protectors. The bedding was too small (the sheet wouldn't tuck in so you'd likely wake up on the mattress itself). The duvet was too small (the exact same size as the mattress) and was damaged so wouldn't do up. The biggest issue was that the bedding was covered in hair and stains. I counted up to 10 hairs before I stopped! We covered the pillows in our own shirts, requested 2 sheets to wrap the mattress in and slept in our clothes. Pretty gross! The shower was tiny too. Lucky I'm slim!
