About The Sumner
Upper Berkeley Street sits in the heart of Marylebone, a residential stretch close to the shops of Oxford Street and the transport links around Baker Street, yet quiet enough to feel removed from the bustle. The Sumner occupies one of these townhouses, offering 20 rooms behind a traditional facade in one of London's most walkable central districts.
Rooms are spacious and well kept, with comfortable beds and air conditioning, and breakfast includes a varied continental spread to set guests up for the day. The hotel also has a restaurant and bar on site, along with a gym, spa and sauna, an indoor swimming pool, and a garden for quieter moments. Meeting rooms and a wedding venue extend its use beyond overnight stays, while concierge and laundry services, luggage storage and free on-site parking cover the practical side of a stay. Staff are generally described as friendly and helpful, though at times can be difficult to track down.
Beyond the front door, Marylebone's pubs, restaurants and entertainment are all within easy reach, making The Sumner a workable base for exploring central London on foot.
What guests say
A quirky hotel, with a limited number of rooms about a 3min walk to the south entrance of Hyde Park, and 5min to the main shopping artery of Oxford and Regents streets. Room was well appointed, quiet and tidy; elevator available for those moving larger travel accessories. Breakfast happened to be free, and was located in the basement (no windows, but reasonably well attended with a mostly continental style breakfast). Would stay again next time I’m attending a BST Concert in Hyde Park.

Location of the hotel is good. Breakfast disappointing. Only a small selection of cooked items and only lukewarm - cold. Service was nearly non existent at breakfast and had to keep looking for the lady as they provide tea bags but don’t make it clear how to get hot water to make a cup of tea. Had to find her to ask her for that! Rooms are ok but when check in is at 1pm, we arrived at 1.20 and given our room only to get up there to find out housekeeping are still cleaning it. Wouldn’t change us to another room told us we had to wait. Then after a further 10 mins said it was ready and we could go up only to find housekeeping still in the room. Overall when you’re paying nearly £300 for one night this is not the service I expect and breakfast definitely wasn’t worth it either. Apart from the location of the hotel I would find an alternative next time.

Fantastic location. Near transport restaurants, bars and shops. Very friendly helpful staff. Easy accessible. The breakfast was a buffet with plenty to choose from.. The room was perfect, tea and coffee making facilities. The room was to the back if the building, so no street noise but no views either. The double bed was two single beds together, not the best attempt to a double bed but as a single bed very comfortable. Bathroom was small but adequate, with lovely soft towels and plenty shampoo etc available. Really enjoyed our three night stsy, definitely recommend The Sumner Hotel

★★★☆☆ (3/5) – Adequate, with clear room for improvement The Sumner Hotel offers a strong first impression, particularly during the Christmas period. The reception team were exceptional — professional, courteous, and genuinely welcoming — and the festive presentation of the public areas created a warm and inviting arrival experience. However, several aspects of the stay fell short of expectations, particularly given the hotel’s advertised four-star rating. In the bedroom, the bedside light switches (separate from the bedside lamps) were non-functional, despite appearing to control the main lighting. The room temperature remained uncomfortably hot throughout the night and, although the air-conditioning fan was set to maximum, it had no noticeable effect. Bottled water was provided, which was a welcome touch, but the excessive heat significantly impacted overall comfort and sleep quality. Additional cooling measures — such as a fan, ceiling fan, or improved air-conditioning performance — would have materially improved the experience. The room layout also presented practical challenges. Electrical sockets located beside the bed were positioned low down and behind a bedside cabinet, making them difficult to access and inconvenient for charging devices overnight. Introducing a charging hub on the bedside table or relocating the sockets would greatly enhance usability. Breakfast was disappointing, particularly given the £15 per person charge. There was no hot water available for making tea, and the pastries appeared pre-packaged and were left cold and firm; gently heating them would have significantly improved their quality, but this was not done. Staff were largely absent during service. In addition, the cooked breakfast items were cold to lukewarm at best from the hot hold, and bacon was unavailable, with eggs seemingly the primary option. Overall, the breakfast offering did not reflect the price point or the standard one would reasonably expect. It is a shame, as breakfast represents the final opportunity to leave guests with a lasting positive impression, and this was largely missed. While the embellished napkins were a pleasant detail, a greater focus on fundamentals — such as table service for tea and coffee, a clear hot breakfast offering, and consistent staff presence — would make a significant difference. Room cleanliness was acceptable but unremarkable, with areas requiring improvement. While it met a basic standard, there were noticeable issues including heavy staining on the bed throw and net curtains, as well as a few stray hairs in the bed, all of which detracted from the overall presentation. The rooms also feel somewhat dated, not in terms of décor but from a furniture perspective. A simple update to items such as the desk and wardrobe would modernise the space considerably, creating a lighter and more contemporary feel. The current dark brown furniture appears worn, with visible marks and chips, which contributes to a heavier and less fresh aesthetic. In summary, while the hotel benefits from excellent front-of-house service and a pleasant atmosphere, shortcomings in room comfort — particularly ineffective air conditioning — cleanliness, and breakfast quality and service materially impacted the stay. Addressing these issues would greatly enhance the overall guest experience. We would consider returning to the hotel, but only if these areas were addressed, as doing so would significantly elevate the customer experience.
