Skipper’s Retreat

A single-storey detached cottage on North Uist, Skipper's Retreat stands 200 yards from the beach at Clachan Sands, where the water meets pale sand and the horizon stretches without interruption. The Outer Hebrides have a particular character—raw light, dramatic weather, rare machair flowers—and this property sits squarely in that landscape, with a private hot tub to watch the weather roll in. The owner is a fisherman; seafood deliveries (weather permitting) come as part of the arrangement.

Inside, the cottage spreads across one floor with two bedrooms and one bathroom, sleeping four. A kingsize bed and a double sofa bed, plus a steam room with a rain shower and whirlpool bath, mean there are genuine creature comforts. The living spaces include two smart TVs, a kitchen equipped for proper cooking—electric oven and hob, dishwasher, air fryer—and the essentials like heating, electricity, Wi-Fi and fresh towels and linen are all included. Mood lighting throughout gives flexibility for long summer evenings or winter dark.

The stretch of coastline here suits walkers, photographers and bird watchers; hen harriers, sea eagles and golden eagles are regularly seen. Lochmaddy Bay, a few miles away, has a shop and pub. Ferries run to Harris, Lewis, Eriskay and Barra. This is a place where you come for the landscape and the isolation—not for amenities nearby. No smoking indoors.
