About Hoppers Cottage Guest House

Hoppers Cottage is a genuinely small bed and breakfast - three guest rooms - on a private road at Whickham, on the Gateshead side of the Tyne about four miles from Newcastle city centre. Being tucked away off the main road makes it noticeably quieter than anything you will find in the city, and the hosts run it themselves, which shows in the consistently high scores it picks up for cleanliness and welcome.

The rooms are comfortable and domestic in scale, with en suite or private bathrooms, free wi-fi, tea and coffee trays and televisions. A cooked breakfast is prepared to order each morning, and the hosts are used to accommodating early departures for flights. Off-street parking is included, which for anyone arriving by car is a considerable saving against a central hotel that charges by the night.

Whickham is a residential village with pubs, a bakery and shops of its own, and it sits on high ground with views back over the Derwent and Tyne valleys. Derwenthaugh Country Park and the Derwent Walk cycle route are close by, and the Metrocentre, one of the largest shopping centres in Europe, is under a mile away with its own rail and bus interchange.

For the city, buses run from Whickham to Gateshead and Newcastle in around twenty minutes, or it is a ten-minute drive across the Redheugh Bridge to the centre. The airport is roughly half an hour by road. It suits travellers who would rather have a quiet room, a home-cooked breakfast and a parking space than a lobby and a lift, and who do not mind a short journey into town in the evening.

I booked this place via Booking.com and had no communication from them or Booking. I arrived the town and found the place difficult to locate. The phone number booking sent together with the booking confirmation didn’t work. I had to search Google for Hoppers cottage contact, before I could get across to them. The lady over the phone confirmed they couldn’t reach me as well because booking.com used a third party called Agoda to make the booking. Nobody was there to welcome you or provide information, other than the person over the phone. The surrounding looked unkept and unsafe as it’s behind a block. For one who arrived there past 9pm, imagine what the scene was like. There were cobwebs everywhere, like a place abandoned or in one those scary movies. I lost almost a £100 as I had to drive to Travelodge not far from there to book my stay whilst in Newcastle. I called booking.com for a refund, but they declined and told me to sort it out with Hoopers cottage - who wouldn’t reply my message. Terrible experience overall! Booked this place for Sunday to Monday night, arrived and found it extremely difficult to find this place, number provided does not work, spend at least 90 min now working how to get access to that property, no instructions given by bookings.com, As of now I can’t even access the property but this is enough to give no star reviews, looks like other people had similar issues. If I’d known never have booked them, not recommended.

Horrendous! No body was there to greet us, phone number didn’t work. We waited outside the property for 2 and a half hours. The front door was open, we went inside to see if we could see any staff - it looked like a derelict building. One of the rooms was open and someone was asleep. It was stinky, dingy and not at all what the pictures online look like!

After a previous hotel let my wife and I down I messaged Kim and she was more than happy to accommodate us for a couple of days at short notice. Joanne met us at the church next door and we were able to park nearby for free with no issues. The room and shared areas were immaculate. Tea and coffee was supplied and the ensuite was small but clean and functional. The bed was really comfortable and as for location it was exceptional. A Lidl and Petrol Station across the road, a few takeaways and a pub all within walking distance. The Metro Centre is only 5 minutes by car and central Newcastle is 10 minutes.
