North Devon

Bideford sits within reach of Exmoor's walking routes, coastal paths and the beaches of north Devon. The Retreat—Buttercup is a glamping bell tent on a working farm, positioned to overlook the lake and surrounding fields. It sleeps two in a king-size bed, with a shower room, woodburning stove and a cooking area equipped with gas hob, fridge and crockery. Bed linen, towels and wifi are provided; electricity and heating are included in your stay.

The tent stands on its own decking, detached from other accommodation. On-site parking is available for one car. The wider site offers a fishing lake, games barn with pool table and table tennis, and a tennis court (bring your own racket). Dogs are welcome. No smoking is permitted inside.

This suits people wanting to step away from town life without entirely roughing it. The location works well for exploring north Devon's countryside and coast by car, or simply staying put to listen to the birds and watch the fields. Check-in is after 4pm and checkout before 10am.

I recently stayed at The Retreat Cottages and honestly couldn’t have asked for a better getaway. Set in the stunning countryside of Higher Clovelly, the views are absolutely breathtaking and create such a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere from the moment you arrive. The cottage itself was spotless, cosy, and beautifully presented, with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The hot tub was definitely a highlight — sitting in it whilst enjoying the incredible views was pure relaxation and made the whole experience feel extra special. What really made our stay stand out, though, was how friendly and welcoming the owners were. Claire and Julie went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed and made us feel completely at home. It’s clear they genuinely care about their guests and take pride in what they offer. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape with amazing views and a personal touch, this is the perfect place. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Me and my partner visited The Retreat for our anniversary and I genuinely couldn't think of a single bad thing to say about this self catering holiday. Carl and Lesley greeted us in and we quickly became comfortable and settled. The goats on site were such a delight to pet and feed just an added bonus to the experience. The hot tub was absolutely divine especially due to there being hardly any light or sound pollution in the area, you were able to sit back relax and peacefully gaze up at the stars. Overall The Retreat is a no brainer in peaceful getaways and I would 100% recommend this to anyone.

We have just returned from the Retreat as a family of 17 having sole occupancy of all the accommodation. The experience was great from the moment we arrived and being greeted by the owners Leslie and Carl. The accommodation itself was lovely. Both hot tubs were in daily use the views from which were gorgeous. The grandchildren fed the goats regularly and made the most of the pitch and put golf. We had a couple of BBQ's which went down well, relaxing in the summer evenings. Carl was very informative about the surrounding area, and it's history and was very good interacting with the children. We took 2 dogs and they played with "Buddy " the resident Collie. Overall our stay was brilliant and I would highly recommend "The Retreat" as the place to stay in such a beautiful part of the country. A stone's throw from the village of "Clovelly" .Thanks also to both Leslie and Carl who were so lovely as nothing was too much trouble . Thanks again for such a wonderful week.

Amazing place to stay! The Owl Barn was beautifully furnished and very clean. Felt like we were living in luxury, especially with the hot tub! The views across to the coast from the hot tub and garden are breathtaking! We even saw a barn owl most evenings after 8pm! The hosts were lovely and very friendly, helped us with any quires and kept the site very tidy. There is 4 hole pitch and putt, and a field to play tennis, badminton, or any other games. Saw lots of wildlife and also made friends with the goats! Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend!
