Benchmark Cottage is a converted stone building in Glaisdale, within the North York Moors National Park. The whole property is yours alone, sleeping two in a ground-floor bedroom with a shower room and living spaces that include a sunroom with garden views. Everything is on one level, accessed via stone steps or an uphill path to the entrance. Whitby lies 15 minutes away by car, or you can catch the train or bus from the village.
The kitchen comes fully equipped for self-catering, with an Aga, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave-oven-grill combination. A rear garden offers two patio areas, garden furniture and a gas barbecue; the front has additional patio space. On-site parking accommodates two cars, and there is an electric charging point. Wi-Fi, electricity, bed linen and towels are included. No smoking inside the property.
The location appeals to walkers—the cottage sits at Stage 12 of the Coast-to-Coast route. The village itself is quiet, positioned opposite the River Esk, with Ford Henry Butcher nearby for provisions. The surrounding moorland and dark skies make this a restful base for exploring the national park or taking day trips to the coast.

Benchmark Cottage What an absolutely beautiful, perfect place this is. We have had the privilege of staying here for 3 wonderful nights and don't want to leave. Firstly the cottage is beautifully presented, very stylish interior and lots of lovely decorative touches. The first room you enter is the "sun room" with a comfortable sofa, bluetooth speaker and great view of the feeders. I spent a good few hours here during our stay. Then into a fully equipped kitchen, including air fryer, counter top oven, kettle, toster, microwave, iron, dishwasher, washing machine etc and a dining table which was set beautifully, so much so we didn't touch it. There is literally everything you can think of. The lounge is stunning, a very comfortable corner sofa, good size tv, beautiful decor and furnishings, just perfect. The bathroom has a good sized walk-in shower, loo, sink, shaving powerpoint, vanity mirror and storage cupboard, the motion detector light is a fantastic idea for night times. The bedroom, extremely comfortable king size bed, great quality bedding and pillows, plenty of storage room & bedside lamps, there is even a fan (they have thought of everything). Outside there are two patio areas, one with a large bbq. Both overlook well kept gardens, lovely plants/flowers and the bird feeders, which were a hive of activity all throughout our stay, with some great species visiting. With parking just down the steps from the cottage and beautiful scenery and villages surrounding, it really is perfect. Joanna and Pete really have set the "benchmark" here, with other places we have stayed in not even coming close. The attention to detail, the quality of furnishings and the added touches like the welcome basket and milk and water in the fridge really sets it apart from other accommodations and we would happily return if visiting the area again. They really do have the perfect place here and it was an absolute pleasure to stay, thank you and well done.

We stayed at Benchmark over valentines weekend, it was absolutely beautiful from start to finish. The cottage was perfectly catered, so cosy, and more than enough space for us. The area surrounding the cottage with the river right next to it is idyllic. On top of that, The wider area is just full of amazing landscapes and the friendliest people. I couldn’t recommend it more!

Loved this cottage. Really homely and well equipped. Best thing was the Aga stove. Loved using it. Nice quiet, clean cottage. Nice garden. Lovely sun room. Enjoyed watching the birds on the feeder. Fabulous hosts.

Absolutely beautiful cottage in the middle of nature, nestled next to the River Esk. The owners surely have made the ‘Benchmark’ for all others to aspire to! My mobility isn’t great, so I didn’t do too much walking, but I didn’t miss out as I could watch the birds from the cosy sun room, whilst my hubby went off exploring. We loved it so much, we’re going again later in the year, weather permitting, the roads are narrow and winding, can’t imagine what it would be like in the snow.
