About Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel

Right on the High Street, Mercure Oxford Eastgate Hotel occupies a spot close to Magdalen College and the Bodleian Library, putting the city's colleges, shops and eateries within easy walking distance. The building spreads across three floors and holds 81 rooms, each with an en-suite bathroom, giving it the feel of a proper city-centre base rather than an out-of-town option.

Guests get the usual comforts of a full-service hotel: a restaurant and bar on site, a snack bar and mini bar for anything in between, breakfast each morning with a decent range of choice, and kids' meals for families. Practical extras include a lift, luggage storage, laundry service, business facilities, concierge help and accessible rooms. Some rooms show their age and could do with sprucing up, though the staff are consistently described as helpful and professional, which goes some way to smoothing that over.

There's no parking at the hotel itself, so anyone driving in will need to plan ahead, but with pubs, bars and restaurants all nearby and Oxford's main sights on the doorstep, most guests will find themselves on foot anyway.

Excellent stay! Danny and the team were incredibly pleasant during our trip. The hotel room itself was very clean as was the entire of the hotel. Buffet breakfast was great and plentiful. We loved having some drinks in the lounge area. Yes the hotel was warm, however there are fans provided in each room. The staff are a credit to this hotel.

The price can be somewhat justified by the very central location; however, the experience here was very different from other Mercure hotels. The absence of air‑conditioning was the first notable issue, with a low‑power, noisy fan being no substitute in the hot weather we were having. Secondly, the first room I was given picked up a loud hum from an extractor fan outside. The hum was actually loudest on the bed, which appears to have been caused by a standing wave - a phenomenon where sound waves bounce between surfaces and reinforce each other at specific points. Instead of the noise spreading evenly, the reflections amplify it in certain spots, making the sound much louder in those locations. Unfortunately, one of those spots was exactly where the bed was. The hum remained audible even with the windows closed. I was moved to a larger room on the top floor, which was quiet and had a nice view. However, it was even hotter than the first, which made sleep impossible. On the plus side, staff were very friendly and helpful, but this is definitely not somewhere to stay in summer. Works need to be carried out to eliminate the hum, and the affected room should be closed until the issue is resolved. As climate change increases temperatures, aircon really needs to be installed.

Unable to review the standard of the rooms as haven't stayed. We booked two rooms for 1 night in July 2026 via booking.com (a month in advance) using a non-refundable rate as it was an important trip we wouldn't have to cancel, dates wouldn't change and travel had been booked from both the UK and Switzerland. In less than 24 hours I realised I had booked the wrong date and the service and help we received trying to rectify this mistake was the worst I have experienced - as simply put - no one cared. In fact everyone did their best not to respond initially - messages were ignored all weekend ( either no one checks or they were ignored), they said they didn't receive the formal fee waiver request from booking.com which I have to give them the benefit of doubt for but booking.com said they sent and didn't hear back. I escalated to central Mecure CS who took the stance that the hotels decision was final but I pushed that the CS was not acceptable and they should at least formally acknowledge Booking.com and reject the request, if nothing else. Since then they have been communicative - only to refuse our request for a refund. We totally respect they are within their rights not to refund it - it was a non-refundable fee - BUT when you look at the conditions 1) one of the busiest weekends in Oxford as its F1 GrandPrix weekend, amongst other things and EVERYTHING is booked or what's left prices are massively inflated - point being very likely to re book - in fact it has now sold out for the night w are booked so even more likely they will manage to re book. 2) this is a genuine mistake that we communicated as soon as we spotted it but were ignored :( 3) They are now taking the stance that they offered help in terms of changing the date and we refused but this simply isn't true - our first stance was re book on the correct date that same weekend but they are fully booked - so in my friends reviews the mention of our refusal of their help simply isn't true. I remain optimistic that someone will realise the power of customer services and looking after people so they speak highly of your services and become repeat customers - but as of now we are left with a £630 bill for two rooms for one night that we do not need - and have to pay for alternative plans the following night when we do need to be in Oxford. Not to mention all the time and effort trying to make contact and escalate things. Communication, being human and caring - especially when mistakes are made go so far......... I have even booked BA flights on the wrong day and was helped immediately.

I booked to stay here via booking.com with my friend. She had a midlife moment and booked the wrong date. As I am flying in from Switzerland we had to make another reservation. Whilst we appreciate that the booking we made was non refundable the hotel have the authority to override if a genuine mistake. Date moves not possible as I am based abroad. The hotel is busy as it’s Silverstone that weekend there should be no issue getting another booking. We tried to appeal to the hotel however the customer service has been genuinely shocking. As a regular Radisson patron I thought Mercure would offer the same level of service. Shocked at their attitude.
