About Croft House Camping

Tucked between the Lake District and the North Pennines, this small pop-up field near Cliburn offers peaceful camping with sweeping Eden Valley views. Part of a working livery yard, the handful of level, spacious pitches are sheltered by dry stone walls – your closest neighbours might well be the resident horses and hens. It's gloriously dark at night, so bring a torch for the walk to the loo. Dogs are welcome year-round, making this an excellent base for exploring nearby wild spots like Cliburn Moss and Whinfell Forest, where red squirrels and deer occasionally appear.

Facilities are minimal – water, chemical disposal, and a toilet on the yard – but that's the charm of a true pop-up site. Penrith and Appleby-in-Westmorland are both 15 minutes away for provisions and pubs, while Lowther Castle and the outer Lake District are similarly close. The pitches handle tents, motorhomes, and awnings with ease, and there's space for a barbecue and chairs. For walkers, mountain bikers, and anyone seeking a quieter corner of Cumbria, it's a gem.

This is how glamping should be. The self-contained pod was immaculate and had everything we needed for a weekend getaway. Most importantly the double-glazing and underfloor heating meant we didn't freeze overnight, which we have done before on so called 'glamping' trips. The outdoor hot-tub was also superb to relax in after a 4 hour drive. The induction hob and frying pan, complemented by fresh eggs from the local farm was just enough for our breakfast fry-up before we tackled the day. We met Amy whilst we were there and she gave us a great idea of a day bus ticket to see the most of the Lakes on a rainy day. Taxi to and from Kendal was around £15 each way and then £12 day-ticket for the bus meant we got all the way up to Keswick and then worked our way back stopping off at Grasmere, Rydal, Ambleside, Windermere and Bowness. Great stay, great accommodation and great host!

Absolutely loved our stay at the lodge Perfect space for 2 of us to chill and relax. The pods did share a space, but you couldn’t hear noise from other guests. The hot tub is shared between pods and is very well maintained and clean… recommend bringing a robe/oodie as there’s a small dash back from the hot tub to the lodge. Hosts are very friendly and fast to respond to any messages. Location was easy to find and lots locally to do and see! We would love to return in the summer to fully enjoy the pod in all its glory! Perfect for families/couples too as you are so close to the other pod - so could holiday together with other guests Loved the welcome basket too Lots of thoughtful touches throughout the cabin 10/10

We loved our stay, very clean & comfortable! When we arrived it took a little while for the pod to get warm (we arrived in stormy wet & windy weather) but when it did, it was so cosy and stayed warm. We used the hot tub after our walk & loved it. It’s a great location, so easy to drive into Kendal or major road links. Also not far from the Yorkshire dales. Best if both! We would stay here again and already recommended it to friends & colleagues.

Stayed for 4 nights here with my boyfriend. What a beautiful location, out of the way of the busy town, no traffic apart from the odd tractor passing but nothing disturbed us. It was a lovely and peaceful stay. We loved watching the local sheep, they’re just a joy to watch and right little characters! We were fortunate to have the hot tub to ourselves during the full stay which was lovely to just hop into straight away on the evenings, didn’t need to wait for it to heat up or heat it ourselves which we’ve been to places in the past where you have a wood burning one, they’re a nightmare 🤦🏼‍♀️ it was sheer bliss l after a long day of walking to sit back and watch the world go by. The pod itself was ideal, plenty of room for us, bed was comfy, couldn’t hear any noise in the evenings (and I’m a light sleeper). I also loved the locally made soaps and the fact there’s local eggs to buy just round the corner from the farm. Also the views on an evening when the sun sets were beautiful!
