About The Kings Arms Temple Sowerby

Steak and ale pie and generous cooked breakfasts are among the reasons to book a table at The Kings Arms Temple Sowerby, a traditional inn where the kitchen turns out plentiful, satisfying food alongside a proper bar. The restaurant and outdoor seating area make it as much a place to eat well as to sleep, and kids' meals and packed lunches mean it works for families and walkers alike.

The nine rooms are described as spacious, spotless and comfortable, each with an en-suite bathroom, air conditioning and free WiFi. Family rooms are available, and the garden views add a pleasant outlook to a stay that's otherwise built around straightforward, well-kept comfort rather than frills.

Staff are consistently noted as friendly and attentive, and the inn's dog-friendly policy extends a genuine welcome to travelling pets. There's a garden for relaxing in, free on-site parking, and facilities for small meetings or weddings. The surrounding area near Penrith suits walking and cycling, with fishing, pubs and other places to eat all within easy reach, making it a sound base for exploring the Lake District without straying from good food and a comfortable bed.

We had an overnight stay and highly recommend it to everyone. Our lovely room was ready and waiting for us, all freshly prepared by Kaitlin. Breakfast was worthy of any 5 star hotel and was served to us by Kaitlin who couldn't do enough for you. Dinner was also first class and the whole place has such a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Will certainly return.

We’ve just returned from our second stay at The Kings Arms in just two months. We first visited in May for three nights and loved it so much we booked a four-night return at the end of June—which we promptly extended to six nights because we simply didn't want to leave. The rooms are beautiful: spacious, comfortable, and absolutely spotless. There are no TVs in the rooms, which suited us perfectly; you don't escape to the countryside to stare at a screen (though there’s one in the games room if you need a fix 😉). What really sets this place apart is the team. From the moment we checked in to the moment we reluctantly left, every single member of staff was exceptional—warm, hardworking, and genuinely attentive. As for the food? Outstanding. Whether it's breakfast or dinner, every dish is clearly cooked with love. The bar is equally impressive with a massive selection to suit everyone. I was thrilled to find Jeremy Clarkson’s Hawkstone Lager on tap during both visits—the absolute perfect reward after a long day's walking. There are local brews and the well known favourites too. Location-wise, it’s spot on. It's incredibly convenient for the A66, making it easy to explore the wider area, yet you have stunning walks along the River Eden just a two-minute stroll from the front door. We thoroughly enjoyed both of our stays and are already planning our next return. Highly recommended!

We recently stayed here in Room 8 and honestly had such a lovely experience. The room itself was beautiful — spotlessly clean, spacious, comfortable and finished to a really high standard. The whole hotel has a lovely atmosphere and feels genuinely welcoming from the moment you arrive. What really made the stay though was the staff. Every single person we dealt with was attentive, friendly, accommodating and couldn’t do enough for us. The service was excellent throughout. The food also deserves a massive mention because it was absolutely amazing — genuinely some of the best food we’ve had in a hotel for a long time, and far better than many places we have locally at home. Overall, this is one of the best hotels we’ve stayed in for a long time, and we travel quite a bit. We would absolutely return and happily recommend it to others.

We visited Kings Arms last night using a voucher we won in a competition and were really impressed with the whole experience. To start, we had the chorizo prawns and the Korean slow roasted pork, both of which were packed with flavour and presented beautifully. For our mains, we chose the steak pie and the orange duck. The steak pie was definitely a highlight — tender, succulent meat with perfect chips alongside it. The orange duck was equally enjoyable and cooked really well. We finished with the lemon posset, served with homemade shortbread, which was fresh, light, and a lovely way to end the meal. A really enjoyable evening with great food and really friendly service — we’d happily recommend it and look forward to returning.
