We’re down this way for a three night break and popped into The Yew Tree tonight, Friday around 7pm. The place was rammed, which tells you most of what you need to know. No booking, but we managed to grab a couple of bar stools and that suited us fine. Started with one of the Ross on Wye ciders from their own farm. Proper Herefordshire cider, not the fizzy stuff, full of flavour and easy to drink. Food is done by Firebird Kitchen and we went for pizzas. I had the pepperoni, my wife had one of the spicy ones. Both were excellent. Proper sourdough bases, cooked as they should be with a bit of char, good toppings, no skimping. Simple food done properly. Despite how busy it was, all the staff were polite and on it. No stress, no waiting around. Prices were fair, parking was easy, and the atmosphere was spot on. Good to see a place like that so well supported on a Friday night. If you’re anywhere near Ross on Wye, it’s well worth a visit. We’ll be back before we head home.

Given that the purpose of my visit was to have lunch and a drink with a friend I was a bit disappointed that no food was on offer. Probably should have done more research. That aside this pub is friendly and offers a wide selection of local beers and ciders (crisps too). Mostly made within a couple of hundred metres, although the crisps were from a mile or two away. As it was a lovely day we sat outside in the large beer garden. We also visited the cider shop and bought a few bottles which were very nice.
